Don't Set Goals…Set Action Steps!

Yesterday a friend and I were going over some goals she had set for the year.
It was a long list, and by the time I had scanned to the bottom of it, I felt a heavy lead weight in the bottom of my belly just looking at the list. It felt like a pile of dread. Ever get that feeling?
Why does that happen? It’s because there’s no end in sight!
It just looks like a long list of not-doable items that tips you into overwhelm because there’s no foreseeable end to them.
You end up thinking there’s something wrong with you, or unconfident, or – but that’s not it – it’s just that you haven’t created your list right!
How to avoid that: break each desire down into action steps you can see, do, and cross off one at a time. Your mind will remain fresh and excited about the projects, and you’ll get them done faster.
For example, instead of saying, ‘this year I want to create financial freedom’ – which has no steps, no forseeable end, and no way to cross it off the list because it’s undefined – and ask yourself, ‘what would being financially free actually mean to me?’
Let’s say that another thousand in income a month would work. That’s another 12K a year. You may be in a position where that would feel like financial freedom to you.
OK, so then you’d ask, ‘what’s one thing I can do today to create another 1K per month?’ It might be send out a newsletter, it might be teach a teleclass, or rearrange your payments, or….
Ask yourself what ALL the things are that you could do that would make your desire real. Break those things into little to-do steps so they are easy to get done. Write them down, choose what you can do right now, and start doing them and ticking them off one at a time. Then do the next, and next.
Your mind LOVES to cross off those done-steps! It makes you feel great, and the greater you feel, the more steps you get done. Easy as pie, no? And no more heavy dread-lead-belly!
