Dying to Tell Me to Live?
By admin on Mar 3, 2008 in - Great Healthy Bod -
Today I got a note from someone asking me to see if I couldn’t get news of alternative therapies and EFT to Dr. Randy Pausch, who is “dying” of pancreatic cancer.
You may not agree with me, and you may get mad at me for saying so, but I’m hearing a mixed message here.
HERE is his “last” lecture, on Oprah, if you have not seen it, on Youtube. My question is this: why the heck is he saying there isn’t anything he can do about it?
Is he trying any alternative anythings? Is he doing everything he can to explore energy therapies and using the imagination, intention and commitment to health that he could?
I don’t hear it. Instead, I hear a deeply-seated, old-school belief system swamping someone who actually looks and acts healthier than most people you see on the streets!
One could almost say that he has set himself up as a kind of martyr, using his own death to tell people to dream and live their dreams. Imagine how much more powerful it would be if he believed his own words and dreamed to live! What if he didn’t feel like he had to die to tell us to live? He’s become such a martyr that if he did live, his message would lose power.
I’d be so interested to see what would happen if he had EFT. I wonder if he has watched The Secret or What the Bleep.
Here’s a man who has actually done Virtual Reality work for Disney! Huh??? Why is he so stuck in believing the impossibility of living, of a remission, of a disappearance of his condition?
Why does he so emphatically declare, “I’m dying!” rather than “I’m living!”? He’s a hero now, but just think about how much greater a hero he’d be if he used his powers of imagination, intention and commitment to living his dream to dream of being *alive* for those three lovely kids of his! Seems he has bought the story, and is stuck in it.
I invite you to look at your own life and see where you undermine your own dreams by deeply seated, old-school beliefs. We all have them, myself included. I say root them out. Use all that amazing energy that it took to hold those beliefs in place for creativity, joy and life.
Don’t be a martyr and declare, “I’m dying!” Be a passionate live-er of life and take advantage of each second of breath you have to pour your heart into your existence.
Yes, I truly believe we create our realities: we create our experience of reality. We, and only we, dictate how we each feel and think and choose to act – that’s our experience of life, that’s our reality.
It may sound glib and silky to ask why Dr. Pausch doesn’t try to create his reality in one way or another. I don’t mean to take away from his experience one whit. But I do question a man who has had years of imagineering being brought down by his own imagination of How It Is.
His purpose in life may be to die to set an example. Who knows? I rather think that living to set an example would be more powerful. I don’t hear him saying he’s doing anything about the cancer, and in fact he announces his docs have told him there’s nothing more he can do, that he has 3 months and he needs to go home and settle his affairs. Those would be fightin’ words to me!
Every day I ask myself how I can stretch my own imagination and my understanding of life. When I’m feeling discouraged, I don’t want to declare I’m dying! I’d rather make a new choice!
Each time we have something that doesn’t feel good to us happen, it’s an opportunity to choose something closer to our heart’s desire.
Is his desire to die? On some level, yes. Certainly not consciously. But it’s there – you can hear it in his own words.
Don’t let that be your reality. Listen to what you say and shift every last word you utter to support your life – your beautiful, unique, vibrant life.

p.p.s. Please understand – it is not my intention to take away from Dr. Pausch’s experience, or criticize. I’m curious to see how people – all of us – believe the stories we’re handed so strongly that we allow them to literally kill us. I’ve been deathly ill, myself, and it wasn’t until I decided I wanted another story that I was able to get well again.
Yes, it took a long, long time to get well again, and yes, it was a huge fight. But I did it. I was a wimp, a complainer, a whiner and a chicken, too – about as far from being a hero as you could get. But I’m here, alive and kicking.
