Earth Day and Inch by Inch

In a note last week, someone said to me: “I can’t figure out why I’m not making it.” When we spoke, it turned out that she had been offered many opportunities recently, but was comparing her success to a much bigger ideal.
I suggested that, instead of saying, “I’m not making it,” and instead of focusing on what she *didn’t* have, she focus on and say yes to the little successes and opportunities she actually did have.
Feel the difference between saying, “I’m not making it,” and “Yes! I’m getting there! I love my journey!” It’s a very different vibration.
If we don’t acknowledge what we already have and have done and have created, we get stuck in “I don’t have.”
We all do this! We think we want this Big Thing called Success, yet as we go through our lives, we forget to acknowledge the opportunites we have right in front of us, the little successes, the little movements and little steps towards real progress that we are actually making.
Inch by inch, we move towards our goals. We all want more, and it’s OK! More love, more money, more friends, more affluence, more generosity, more comfort–it’s OK to want! In the tradition called Kebzeh, which predates Sufism, they say, “kana’at.” Which roughly translated means “I have, AND I can have more.”
Ask yourself, “how can I feel five degrees happier? How can I stretch my smile one more quarter inch? How can I add one more heart of love to the world today? What am I really happy that I did today? What am I proud of about myself today?”
The secret is appreciation for each little tiny bit of yourself and your life AS you keep focusing on your long-term dreams. We all say we want to change for the better, but if we don’t look for and acknowledge the changes we make, how will we know we’ve done it? Inch by inch and appreciation is how!
