Kill Bill II
By admin on May 1, 2008 in - Your Biz Success -
Today I got an angry note from someone who took my how to write and publish an ebook course last year. Don’t be like this man.
This is what he said: “I don’t know why you’re griping about this orphaned works copyright thing. It won’t affect most of us, and it will probably be defeated anyway. I’m tired of hearing about it. Unsubscribe me.”
Whew. Here he is with his brand new ebook, a series of teleclasses and audios he intends to make and sell, and he’s wondering what the big worry is?
OK, let’s pretend that this private copyright registry bill goes through. And let’s say the man who wrote me produces all this great stuff. He’s excited, looking forward to helping people, selling his books and classes….
…and after a month or so, he Googles to see his page ranking. And he sees that, under his own titles, three or four marketers, another author, and a school teacher from East Podunk have copied his work, put their own names on the various products, and set up websites to sell their own identical versions of his materials.
He has no recourse; nor will he receive a dime from any of their sales.
Do you think he might just get a little bent out of shape because of that?
He could have helped stop this bill! Here’s one link to go to to sign a petition: GoPetition.com/petitions/no-to-orphan-works-act.html
And here’s another to get addresses to write and call folks in the gov: USA.gov/Contact/Elected.shtml
Now read the rest of this article to see how else this silly man could be affected by this bill indirectly, because his wife is a painter….
His wife decides to register her artwork with the private copyright company.
To do so, she has to make it available publicly–making it vulnerable right from the start. She has to pay to register each piece–with people who cannot enforce the copyrights to her now-publicly released works–huh? Is this nuts or what?
They both lose. As will you and I and everyone else who writes books, screenplays, poems, or any other written works. As well as will musical, visual and performance artists with their intellectual property and copyrighted works.
Up until now–when it seems that our rights waver in the gusts of the major greed of a few selfish people–we could produce a work and it would automatically be copyrighted as our own work. Right from the start.
And if we choose to register it, it is done in a confidential manner that includes enforceable rights, as well. Yes, registering a copyright does cost a fee, but having the automatic ownership from the get-go makes it so not every last piece of work we do must be registered to own the rights.
Do you really want to ignore this and hope it goes away all by itself? Believe me, it won’t.
Do you really not care that someone else can put their name on your work and call it theirs–and you have zero recourse nor share of the revenues created?
You are NOT helpless or powerless. Use this link–please. Please take the very short time it takes to sign a petition against this stupid, greedy, ridiculous act: GoPetition.com/petitions/no-to-orphan-works-act.html
Here a link with contact information for the president and all US senators, representatives, state governors and legislators–CALL OR WRITE THEM! I have.
I care about my work, and want it protected–not available to others who will trash it, change it, rip it off and/or sell it for their own. Use this link–please: http://www.usa.gov/Contact/Elected.shtml
Do you care about that book you just wrote? That painting you just did, or the ones you’ve done over the past 34 years?
And make sure you tell everyone you know who could possibly be affected by this absurd, greedy, insane, stupid act so they can help do something about it. It hurts us all!
Good grief. I can hardly believe anyone had the cojones to even think this act up.

Here’s a note I got from one of my readers–you can do what she has done:
Hi Angela!
Thanks for info on the Orphan thing. Shocking, but glad to be informed. I’ve gotten word out to my list, a journalist in SW New Mexico, and letters to all my elected reps.
In the process of accomplishing these contacts I allowed myself to FEEL what the whole deal was bringing up; and I noticed that even though I didn’t feel way engaged emotionally, what was there was anger, and sort of hints of the old starving artist/victim stereotype.
I chose to tap on these: “Even though I’m feeling angry and powerless when I think about the Orphan Works Act of 2008, and the mentality that would devise it, I love and accept and support myself completely!”
I also did Ho’oponopono cleaning on it when I realized how utterly clueless I felt about the mind(s) that could spawn such “legislation”!
So, since it seems that everyday consciousness is the order of our days now, thought I’d like to share with you how one woman did her due diligence in the physical plane, while staying congruent with the big story.
Happy Day!
