Open Mouth, Insert Legs All the Way to Hips….
By admin on Feb 4, 2008 in - Your Biz Success -
Someone wrote this to me following my last post: “You couldn’t have slammed us webmasters any harder could you?”
My apologies if you are offended. That was not my intention at all.
Rather, in my experience watching people try to set up websites for business, I see a multitude of people try to do far too much all at once, usually for a whole lot of money they can’t afford yet, and that they should be investing in other parts of setting up their biz.
These people, only wanting to get up to speed and have a site that gets the word out, often have little to no understanding of what a website does or requires for functionality, and many times, are disappointed by webmasters who do way too little for way too much.
It isn’t *only* about “bad” webmasters – it’s also that the biz owner still isn’t clear yet.
So that’s why I say create a blog first, so they can get really clear what they need.
A blog will take that interim strong pressure off where they’re saying, “man, I need a site, but how do I design/create one, where’s a good designer/webmaster, what do I need to put on my site, etc.?”
It gives them time, while also allowing an online presence.
I appreciate your writing to say that I had left out the other side of the picture – thank you! There certainly are very good website designers who are also savy about how to create a site that works and is designed to look good, as well.
Perhaps one of the thngs that hangs webmasters up is that they are still trading dollars for hours, rather than charging per-package and arranging their time so they can do more inless of it.
The website designers I know here are overworked and exhausted – and each one is a dollar-amount-per-hour person. Is there a way you can delegate more so you can do what you are especially good at, and get others to help do what you don’t like, aren’t good at, can’t bear to do for the drudgery?
Think about creating small sites going that bring you 300 or more dollars amonth, so eventually you have a bunch of them supporting you so you can relax a bit. Bothe biz owners and website designers can do it – if you bring in passive income like that, you’ll feel the pressure ease.
If you can get the word out as to who you are and where to find you, it would be a tremendous service to the people who are looking for someone who can create a great site, make it work to market their business, and be affordable and serviceable.
I think the thing I hear the most from biz owners is that they have to wait for their site changes to be made, and get really frustrated when they need to correct mistakes or add new products in a jiffy – I have a friend who had to wait 9 weeks to get one very critical letter changed on her site – that one letter in her subhead made the difference as to whether she was rated porn or not! Do you think she was just a bit upset?
But maybe that really, in truth, isn’t the norm. If you’re a savvy website designer, let me know – send me your URL where people can see samples of your work, and maybe I’ll make a list of you all and post it for people to choose from!
Again, thanks for letting me know I forgot half the picture – I appreciate your speaking up.
