EARTH HOUR DAILY?
Did you observe Earth Hour Saturday? I think we ought to do it every day–and even (gasp!) turn off lights as we leave rooms, etc. Why not save ourselves the money, as well as the energy? Just makes sense!

Apparently there IS a beginning of a daily Earth Hour….earthhour.org

YOUTUBE INFO: For those of you who use YouTube for your Marketing, this is important for you:

YouTube Feature Tells Video Creators When and Where a Clip Is Being Watched

“In a move to provide better data to its users, YouTube formally announced late Wednesday that it had added a free feature that will show video creators when and where viewers are watching their videos. With this, the company hopes to turn YouTube from an online video site into a place where marketers can test their messages, Tracy Chan, YouTube product manager, said.

“This program, called YouTube Insight, provides a detailed view of a video’s popularity, both over time and geographically, broken down by state. (Internationally, YouTube Insight is not as insightful, providing only popularity by country.)”

PRIVATE PET GRAMMATICAL PEEVE: I notice so many emails–and now, even website pages–that have copy with the hyphen used like this: word- word.

Example: You can have it, too- today!

If you must use the hyphen, please use it like this:
word – word (hyphen space hyphen)
or like this:
word–word (2 hyphens no spaces)

So it would look like this:
You can have it, too – today!
Or this:
You can have it, too–today!

“Officially,” the hyphen “ought” to be an m-dash, but not only do most people not know what that is, they don’t know how to type one. And worse, the m-dash doesn’t translate into html–if you do use it in your original document, it only ends up mucking up the code.

People who use Microsoft Word to create their web pages often end up with a simple dash and a space (word- word), which looks bad, and makes the writer (you) look illiterate.

If that matters at all to you, choose one or the other:
word – word
or like this:
word–word
but not word- word
or even worse, word-word.

I used to use word – word, but I like how word–word looks, so am trying to remember to use that now.

ALSO: Copy on sites created in Word also tends to lose the possessive contraction punctuation. So, for example, a phrase like “the player’s cup” will end up “the players cup,” which, as you can see, makes no sense at all without that apostrophe.

Watch carefully for typos like these, because once you become well-known, you don’t want to be a well-known illiterate. In today’s world, illiteracy = stupid, and most of us don’t want to be seen as stupid, right?

MICROSOFT WORD: If you use Microsft Word to create documents and copy and paste the text into a web page or blog, you’ll find that the hidden code embedded into Word will give you really odd symbols and errors. Find another document-creating source, like Open Office (free) or Simple Text, if you use a mac.
