Do You Have Great, Unshakable Support for Your Life?

One of the most precious things that can help make your life as great as you wish it to be is an unshakable support system.

Whether that consists of your family, friends, co-workers, business team or a great coach, that support is essential.

These are the people (or person) to whom you can go and feel safe, and by whom you feel loved and uplifted.

With them, you can open your heart, let your hurts fall out on the floor for examination and healing, without any judgement or criticisms or you-should-haves.

They stand by you

They love and support you with massive amounts of love as you be with that pile of scary stuff, deal with it, and decide what to do next.

They stand by you as you go through and transform your circumstances, attitudes, thoughts, or situations so you end up feeling good, so you feel open and delighted again.

hugYou know for certain that they have the uplifting energy and sweet, unbiased love and support that only someone who believes in you can give you.

You know for sure that, even if they don’t have any solutions for your problem, any new perspective through which to look, they still love you without judgement. And that they will be with you until and as you choose something new, something that does work for you.

You also know that, even if you don’t don’t like what they have to say, they will tell you the truth of their own experience; they will give you their opinion and perspective; and they will tell you how they feel.

And you know that they will never insist that you do anything their way–that yes, they’ll have their say, but they know that you need to make your own decisions that may even be in direct opposition to what they say or would do, themselves.

To have a person in your life
who will be this for you is mighty precious.

It’s a gift beyond measure. It’s like having a rock to lie down on in the sun and breathe in new light and life. It’s strength where there seemed, before, to be none. It’s a line to life when life itself seems impossible. It’s a mirror for the depth of your own power, the power that takes you where ever you want to go.

These are the kind of people who ask you what you’d like to get out of this situation, rather than joining you in blame, shame, resentment or pity parties. You’ve found a gem. What a gift!

Do you have a person like that?

If not, I invite you to become one, yourself, to at least one person.

You’ll find out what it’s like, to be that generous, that kind, that truthful. It will grow you faster than you can even begin to imagine. And one day you’ll see that you’ve had people like this in your life the whole time–you just never knew it. You just never recognized them.

If you do you have people in your life who love you and support you, who make you feel safe and like you can do anything you set your mind to, then send them love and gratitude, because they need it, too!

Does Your Brand Miscommunicate What Your Biz Is About?

I once had a client, Greg, who came to me for assistance with his marketing.

He’d invested a fortune in his company but wasn’t attracting enough paying clients.

He was scraping by, waiting for the momentum to kick in.

And it wasn’t kicking.

Greg hadn’t been frugal about his marketing materials. They were developed by professional designers and copywriters and were polished and fashionable.  There was only one problem: they didn’t communicate his brand.

Who do you work with?

How do you help them?

What do you do for them that no one else can do as well?

Why should anyone choose you instead of the alternatives?

That’s what your prospective clients want to know. When people meet you or see your website, they’re asking, “How should I think about you? Where do you fit in the filing cabinet of my mind?”

Like Greg, many entrepreneurs who come to me for help with their marketing are actually struggling with an identity problem: they don’t have a clear one.

A brand is the unique identity of your business.

Your brand identity includes:

  • Who your intended audience is
  • What makes you the right choice for them
  • Why they should believe your claims

In Greg’s case, he could have ditched the expensive brochures no one reads, and the confusing web site filled with puzzling images and then just shared from his heart:

“I work with small business owners who are tired of hiring candidates who present well but don’t perform. I help them to identify the profile of the ideal candidate and the best way to select them. As a result, they hire the right one the first time, save money on training and make money by having a productive employee from the get-go. My system doesn’t rely on self-reporting, so profiles are more accurate, as seen by our 92% retention rate.”

What example would YOU give of a brand identity?

More often people think of the Nike swoosh logo or Starbucks’ green mermaid.

But those aren’t brands – they’re logos.

You may think of Big Mac hamburgers, Crocs holey shoes and iPod players.  But those aren’t brands – they’re products.

Positioning

Even for entrepreneurs and solopreneurs, brands need to be positioned, which means defining who they’re for and why they’re the best choice for them.

In the example above, we have an intended audience (small business owners) and a differentiator (very accurate profiles); this is the beginning of brand building.  In addition, you should articulate a brand promise (money saved on training and made on productivity) that lays out what to expect from an experience of your brand.

What’s your brand promise?

  • Volvo promises its cars are the safest.
  • Ben & Jerry’s brand promises innovative ice cream flavors and social responsibility.
  • FedEx promises your stuff will be delivered overnight.
  • I promise you can increase sales without selling out.

Unenlightened marketers skip this step entirely and doom themselves to commodity status.  Do you want to be just another entry in the Chamber of Commerce directory?  Of course not!  You want to be the Starbucks of your profession.

Starbucks proved the power of branding by transforming a measly pennies-per-cup beverage into an experience its audience would pay scads of money for.

They expanded the coffee playing field from simply aroma and flavor to include atmosphere, skilled service (not from wait staff, but “baristas”), fair trade and more benefits than my poor little truck stop coffee counter had ever heard of.

How can you transform your own commodity into a brand?

(Hint: differentiated value)

The irony here is that almost every business has a brand identity of some kind, just not necessarily the one they want.

I’ve heard people refer to “the expensive place,” or “that weird guy who does something health-related.”

They’ve called brands “cars for old people,” or “the ones made in sweat shops.”

Our task is to brand ourselves, consciously, with an identity, and work to make it at least as prominent in the minds of our audience as the other impressions they receive.

If you don’t do it, someone else will do it for you, and you might not like the results.

What IS Success to You? What is Your Soul’s Deepest Desire?

What, really, *is* success–to you? And why would you want it? What will you do once you attain success? How will you contribute? With whom will you share your joy, your money, your time, your talents, gifts and skills?

This is what is important, not the just the money. I had a deep breakthrough a few years ago when I read Lynne Twist’s book, The Soul of Money, when I read that she defines money as a vehicle that allows you to fulfill your soul’s deepest desires. My heart flipped into a new position–at last I could contribute and receive money and it was OK!

Wow! That was a far cry from the bland, uninspiring definitions I’d heard before: it’s just ‘an energy exchange,’ ‘a vehicle of commerce,’ ‘neutral energy,’ and so on.

I used to hate selling

I felt ashamed to want money–like it was some spiritually bad thing to have anything to do with. Now I saw that I could acquire it and use it and it was OK–that I could allow it to come and go through my hands so I could contribute *and* feel fulfilled and valuable.

And then someone asked me this:

What if you thought of each dollar as a unit of appreciation? Like every time you get paid for something, someone is saying, ‘thank you, I appreciate what you’ve done for me.’ I love that! So now each time I pay my bills, I’m saying thank you to that company or person for the service rendered.

What is wrong with selling yourself?

If we remember that the root of the word ‘to sell’ means to serve, it looks like a different animal, doesn’t it? The manner of selling is what counts. It isn’t serving to push yourself and your goods on anyone. That will end up–especially in this day and age where everyone down to a one-year old is suspicious of salesmen–in your being pushed away.

Rather, what would happen if you simply shared with people what you love about your work? What results you get with your clients? What they get out of your work? Then you are in integrity, staying in your own space and not intruding on theirs, and they get to choose whether or not what you do resonates with them or is anything they’d like to try out.

If you don’t tell people, they won’t find you!

Because believe me, in this busy world, if people don’t hear about you and your work, two very sad things happen: the people who want and need what you do never hear of you and they miss out receiving the benefits of your gifts, and you miss out on contributing to them and feeling fulfilled because you helped those people. Everyone loses.

We need your services and products.
We need YOU and your gifts and talents.
We need you to prosper so you can continue on your fulfillment journey.
We also need you to prosper as an example for what we can do, too.

I want you to feel fulfilled, humble, proud and excited, rather than bashful, afraid and ashamed of selling and of your desire for money.

Money helps you feel appreciated and supported. What’s wrong with that?

Each dollar is a Unit of Appreciation you give and receive.

Selling is letting people know about your passion and what it does for people in a way they can receive and make an informed choice.

So money and selling seem like different animals now, don’t they?

Does that help? 

It sure would have helped me tremendously to be able to think like that way back when I was still starving! I’d have been able to see myself and my role in life in an entirely different light, and thoughts of ending that life would have never occurred to me–they sure don’t anymore!

I used to picture millionaires as greedy, hand-wringing money-mongers. For some reason that image–like the skinny, black suited Bad Guys in cartoons–stuck with me for years, although I really did know better.

Don’t let that image wreck your relationship with money.

Instead, allow the thought of money as an instrument of fulfillment inspire you to think of your soul’s Deepest Desire. And then go about fulfilling that Desire as a Sacred Mission, step by step.

I just finished reading Seth Godin’s book, Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us

If you haven’t picked it up yet, I’m thinking that you’ll want to if you have any interest at all in how our tolerance for push marketing is now close to zero, and instead we are actively drawn to, seeking and  cultivating more connection, relationships and passion.

He says: “A tribe is a group of people connected to one another, connected to a leader, and connected to an idea….A group needs only two things to be a tribe: a shared interest and a way to communicate….Human beings…need to belong. We want to belong to not just one tribe, it turns out, but to many….Tribes make our lives better. And leading a tribe is the best life of all.”

Connection

He discusses social media (twitter, facebook, etc.) and how there are literally thousands of ways to connect, and how, with just one idea, each of us is a leader. He says, “The market needs you…and your vision and your passion.”

As a staunch proponent of living life with passion, I am so excited to see this book and its celebration of the individual’s potential to co-create a world of more passion and heart-filled creativity.

Membership Sites: Beware of the Hazards of Free Trials

You’ve probably seen many membership sites and one-month ‘free’ trial on websites. They’re a great idea – but I invite you to please be careful.

Some one-month ‘free’ trials don’t have end-of-trial notifications, and if you’ve forgotten you signed up, it can be a big surprise to get their charge on your card at the end of the trial time.

Here’s what I’ve learned to do:

I’m really choosy now as to what I sign up for! If I do decide to do the trial, I write on a sticky note the site name, my info (username and password), and the date I signed up for the trial membership.

If I have doubts as to whether I’m going to stay, I make a reminder to check with myself by a certain date so I can unsubscribe if I want to before I get charged.

If I know I’m going to stay, I add the site to my list of monthly payments that I make so it won’t be a surprise when my card gets charged.

Another thing.

If it’s a site where you could possibly enter all kinds of info and data, you may not want to put time and data into it so you don’t want to leave when the time the trial month is up.

Just wait! You’ve lived without the site until now–it’s OK to live without it until you make a final decision. Don’t put your data and info on it yet until you’re sure.

I’m talking about shopping cart sites, autoresponder sites, affiliate sites, web 2.0 sites–they know darn well if you start populating all the info fields with your data you’re not likely to leave.

Do your research first.

Avoid entering your email address or any of your personal info before you see if it’s the one you feel best about sticking with on a permanent basis.

If it’s a site where you get a lot for your money, and you feel good about the people who run it, and the integrity and quality of what you get, then don’t hesitate!

“ME? Do Podcasts?” Top Ten Things You Need to KNow

I didn’t think I’d ever be interested in podcasting. This is what went through my mind: “Ugh! Too much work over what I’m doing already, I don’t have time, I don’t know how, who’d want to listen to me anyway, bandwidth, where to host – ugh.”

But then I asked myself, if I were truly as committed to serving the lifting of our vibrational field as I thought I was, what more could I do to assist? And guess what I heard my inner voice say? You’re right – podcasting. Otherwise known as Internet Radio.

How does it help me serve?

Ever heard of a little thing called iTunes? How many people go there every day to find music, interviews, messages and other audible material to enjoy and get inspiration? Literally millions.

Did you know you can get your podcast served up by iTunes – for no charge? Nots to mention the other freebie or low-cost podcast directories.

So imagine you have an important message.

You’re a coach, or a preacher, or a healer, or a business leader, or an inspirational speaker. You know as well as I do the value of being able to get in front of people. Why would you deprive yourself of this one incredible way to get the word out – your word?

What you need to know if you want to do podcasting

  1. How to create and launch your show
  2. How being a talk show host can be a great platform for you and your business
  3. What type of format is best for you
  4. How long your show should be
  5. How to record, post and edit your show with ease
  6. The easiest way to create content for your show that will keep your listeners coming back for more
  7. How to get the guest of your dreams
  8. The fastest, easiest and simplest way to attract and build a worldwide audience
  9. When you should do a free vs. paid internet radio show or podcast
  10. How to make a profit from your show even when you’re first beginning

So imagine yourself able to speak with the people you love and respect, from whom you have gotten inspiration and motivation. Who are they? Start making lists now!

And who do you want to reach with your message? Write it down!

And what are some topics you like to expound upon? Write them down!

Now, you’ve already started on your podcast journey – what’s stopping you from going full-tilt?

Go for it!

Imagine yourself five years from now having NOT gone for it – how does that feel? Ugh!, right? You don’t need that! Start living and expanding your most outrageous, fun, daring and beautiful Dream right now!

Why? Because when you do, you inspire the rest of us to keep going. You give us permission, simply by being who you are at your core best, to do the same. We want you! We want your gift – stop hiding it in the closet! All it’s doing there is gathering dust and moths! It’ll die in there! Bring it out and give it life!

You never know how you affect people.

Everywhere you go, even if you don’t say one word to anyone, you affect others. Just by how you walk, dress, eat, speak, move, drive, interact. You could inspire some shy person today to stand tall just by holding your head high as you walk into the grocery store.

Imagine how it would be if your podcasts got out to not hundreds, not thousands, but millions of hungry listeners who crave your words and message!

Transform Your Negative Feelings to Positive Creative Power

A couple of weeks ago, I was amazed that about 80% of the people I worked with were dealing with various shades of “I can’t.”

Here are some of the beliefs people had:
I can’t because if I do I’ll lose my family.
I can’t because I don’t have the money.
I can’t because I might succeed.
If I do I’ll be ridiculed within the scientific community.
I can’t because I’ll make so much money the government or someone will take it way.

Thing, is, once you get at the underlying messages all these fears carry, you’ll have the courage, skill and knowledge to laugh and do what you choose.

Here’s an example….

“Joe” said, “My family wants me to stay in my job as a house-painter because it has a steady salary. I hate it, and I know I can be successful running a landscaping business.

“I’m good at it, but I just don’t have the credit to ask for a loan, and I can’t afford to buy the equipment I need. I’m afraid my family will think I’m nuts, that I’m endangering them, and I’ll never hear the end of it from my father-in-law if I fail.”

I asked him how big his fear of failure was on a scale of 1 to 10. “20!” he said. “It makes my knees weak to think of my wife screaming at me and my kids being disappointed in me.”

And how big was his fear of asking the bank or someone in his family for a loan. Off the charts. “I know they don’t think my ideas are worth anything.”

And his fear that he couldn’t provide for his kids?
Another 20.

I had him imagine this picture: a giant wheelbarrow full of all his fear. Two 20s and an off-the-charts overflow of all this I-CAN’T energy. Not to mention the weak-in-the-knees feeling, the queasy belly, the sweat down his back.

“I hate it!” he said, as he described it to me. “I don’t want to feel this way! I want to do what my heart loves, and what I know how to do really well! I’m furious!”

We added that to the wheel-barrow, too. He then made it into a dump truck to be able to hold it all.

I knew he expected me to take him through some tapping with EFT (the Emotional Freedom Techniques – info at EFTBooks.com ).

But I waited a bit, and had him really feel the energy inside all those fears, anger and frustrations. This is a bit different from most EFT sessions where you are ordinarily coached to not suffer through the intensity.

Instead, I wanted to point out to him the enormity of the energy he was carrying around.

I asked him, “What if all that energy you’re feeling, plus the energy it takes to resist and hate feeling that way, was available to you for creativity, confidence and power?”

What a concept, no? He’d never thought of it that way.

“It’d be huge!” he said. “Man, what a waste it is that I’ve used it like this!”

So now we tapped, starting with the Karate Chop Point. Here are a couple diagrams of the face and torso tapping points if you’re unfamiliar with EFT.

We said as we tapped: even though:
I’m afraid of failure
my wife will scream at me and call me a dummy
and a no-good
I’ll feel small and useless and
I’m afraid I’ll start drinking again
my father-in-law thinks I’m just a jerk
I’ll never have his approval
I’ve never had it anyway
I hate feeling this way
I hate how stupid I feel
I feel so unsupported
and angry at them all
especially myself
I’m so afraid to let go and trust that my heart is right
I feel like such a chicken
no one appreciates me
I’m afraid to start stepping out of my job

Pretty real feelings. Hard to carry around for so long.

It turned out, after we got through all that, that he did have occasional invitations from people to do some landscaping for them, but he’d been too afraid to take them.

So we went though fear of calling them back, fear of rejection, fear of them laughing at him – until he finally started laughing and said, “I get it! All I need to do is take one fear at a time and turn it around into usable energy. I can do that!”

At the end of our session, I had him look at the Fear Dump Truck again.

“It’s gone! It’s a huge mountain of energy now!” he exclaimed. “It looks like new snow, clean and sparkling, and I can use it any time I want!”

He saw himself running and jumping right into the heart of the mountain, surrounding himself with energy and power and confidence, and allowing his heart to fill with clarity and enthusiasm for his dream.

Joe called me last night. He had me laughing as he told me he’d realized that he’d been so closed down that he had ignored his wife saying she wished he would “just get out of that stupid painting job.” Fear makes us blind!

He said, “I never even heard her say it! She told me she’s been wanting me to do something else because I’ve been so unhappy I’ve been a jerk. No wonder my father-in-law has hated me!”

Take your fear, anger, grief, blame, shame, self-pity, resentment, and self-hatred energy, pile it up where you can “see” it, do some tapping and clean it off, polish it up, and use it for your dreams. It works.

Don’t tell me you don’t have any of that! WE ALL do. It’s a gift! Think of the power in it! Hunt for every inch of it and turn it inside out.
