Milana Leshinsky: Musician Turned Millionaire Marketing Expert

Milana Leshinsky, Online Marketing ExpertLast week I had the honor of interviewing Marketing Expert Milana Leshinsky (Milana.com).

I was particularly pleased because I have gone through three or four of her online courses, and got great results with them. So I wanted you to meet her, find out all about her and her online marketing secrets.

After a childhood intensely focused on musical training, Milana emmigrated from the Ukraine in the late ’90s, expecting to continue her musiccal career. You’ll find out why that didn’t pan out, and how she jumped from music to enormous online marketing success – scared to death, not having known anything about computers or even what a mouse was!

You’ll also find out how Milana creates compelling marketing messages; why she doesn’t blink an eye over refunds; and how she discovered the secrets to membership site profits.

I was fascinated to find out why Milana insists on avoiding cleverness; how she finds out what her audience really wants (and why); and why it makes sense to sell your product before you even create it!

And, for those of you who shy away from charging high fees, listen up! Milana discusses why people will, indeed, pay your high-ticket fees; the value of specific packaging; and how to introduce yourself and your plan for instant recognition and sales.

Carol Gold: Bronze Sculptor

Carol Gold, Sculptor

Carol Gold and her sculpture, Time

CAROL GOLD: “I sculpt in wax, then cast into bronze.

“I have chosen to work with human and animal forms to best express my feelings about nature and the human condition.

“I strive to convey a mood as well as create a sense of motion in space. Through the years my sculpture has moved in the direction of increasing simplicity….”

I had the very good fortune to live in the same area as Carol in the early 90s, and was able to visit her in her studio.

I was so impressed with her ability to get so much movement and depth of emotion in such simple forms.

Her handling of the wax she uses as her base medium is exemplary – using it sparingly, details forgone in stark, yet incredibly soft, powerful movement.

Carol doesn’t go in for the loud, jazzy patinas you see on a lot of contempoary bronzes. She sticks with accentuating the form and feeling of each piece by using graduated bronze coloring or the soft greens found on old statuary.

Carol is a true master of her art. Through spare detail and restraint of line, she expresses the full range of the essence of being, and the elegance of the physical form as it moves through emotion and the natural world.

The Daring Dreamers ShowcaseTo listen in on our complete interview (31 minutes) on Outdoor Sculpture and all about it, how Carol got commissions, makes her art, and more, go HERE or click on the I Dare You Radio logo to the left.

Carol was Featured Artist of the Month on the International Association of Women Sculptors website last month – see images of her work HERE.

And you can see the beautiful article about Carol and me on pages 33 through 39 at the online magazine, Artizen Magazine this month HERE.

Patricia Bengston, Stone Sculptor: Living Her Deepest Dreams

bengston-face
One of California’s foremost stone sculptors, Patricia Bengston-Jones is a shining example of a Daring Dreamer – someone who doesn’t take Normal for one minute and who bucks the odds to live her Deepest Dreams. Not because of any rebellion, necessarily, but because it’s simply who she is and what she does.

She’s a powerful example of someone who really lives her passion, not alowing the numbing, everyday trance that surrounds us that says, “get a job, be norrrrmaallll…” overtake her!

Raw, mythical power

I was really taken with her work. I love the raw, mythical quality of it, and how she allows the stone to be stone, rather than trying to make something pretty-pretty out of it. It’s stone: heavy; plain; figured; textural; translucent; eternal; even humorous.

bengston-jones-sail

I love how her forms give you an inkling of a story, but not much more than will tickle your own frames of reference and put you on the beginning of a path to create your own stories from the images.

Time and Form

lets-clean-the-barnaclesIDYRHere is one of the pieces I loved the most. Although these are all maritime themed, not all of her works are.  Let’s Clean the Barnacles Off: made from Travertine and Slate, 10″ x 7″ x 20″

Here’s what she has to say on her site: PBengtson.com

“As a seeker of knowledge, with ten years of landscape and (color) field painting in 1972, I returned to finished my education, to find answers in my search of the ‘unknown’.

“This led me into sculpture and using concepts of the prehistoric monumental stone sites and myths. I visited England, Italy and Mexico, and lived in the Southwest.

I used the monolithic forms, arches and stacking or layering to denote the passage of time in my sculpture

bengston-jones-marble“This background information along with the mythology of the Vikings, has helped me research my own heritage which combines Swedish and Northern European.

“My endless search has helped to shed some light on the unexplained phenomena of my past cultures. It enables my sculpture to come together as a ‘Passage to My Heritage.’ ”

Make sure you visit her site for more mythical, powerful stone and glass work – especially check out that gateway she’s carving in the image above! See lots more of her works at her website, PBengtson.com.

How My Ma Lived Artfully and Why I Never Paint Gory Stuff

ma

When I was a child, I admired the fact that my mother was a professional artist.

She painted stark watercolor land and seascapes, inspired by the windswept beaches, watering holes and harbors up and down the New England coast that she and my dad sailed through.

She was often commissioned to do pastel portraits of our friends, neighbors and their kids. I remember going with her to the portrait sittings and playing with the siblings of the kids who were sitting. We were all bored, and made fun by creating our own portraits. That’s where it all began for me.

ma-painting

This is one of her watercolors of Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island, where we lived.

I wasn’t such a huge fan of her portraits, but I loved how she could get across the idea of the glassy water of Bar Harbor, Maine using one swipe of her brush, or the freedom of a gull in the air with only a squiggle made perfectly, freely just-so. Because of her, I started drawing at age six, and never stopped.

Gory stuff

I used to pore through her art history books, study her sketches, snitch any old art materials it looked like she’d abandoned, and practice on her scraps of paper.

goyaOne of the things I remember clearly about her books were the gory, hideous war paintings from before World War I.

I didn’t realize that at the time that they were painted, drawings and paintings were the only way that anyone could communicate what was happening to people in one part of the world to the people in another.

Instantaneous communication is so now ubiquitous – even back then in the 50s with our dial phones, radio and the beginnings of TV – that I thought it was just sheer perversity that anyone would want to paint such subjects.

I misunderstood the function of art before radio and TV. I didn’t get that Goya’s paintings and Daumier’s drawings were like newspapers today, conveying what was going on at the time.

If you look back at their amazing work: Francisco Goya (see here) and Honore Daumier (see here), could have unquestionably been Pulitzer prize reporters for their eras. Nonetheless, I was dismayed by their subject matter – most of which was far milder than what is “normal” to see in the media today.

Not for me

I decided that I’d never paint or carve anything so gruesome. I wanted to see color, light, delight, soul, depth, honesty, courage, beauty, inspiration, power, connection to the divine. I decided, too, that I had to go beyond just making art – I wanted to live my life artfully, as well – although I really didn’t know quite how to do that yet.

Over the years since those days, I have made a practice of just that: trying to live my life as artfully as I can. I’ve found that attempting to make each thing I do perfect leads to stagnation, boredom and huge anxiety (will it be good enough; can I do it?). Instead, I just slow myself down a fraction to be able to breathe in and out, look at what I’m doing or the person I’m with, then appreciate them as much as I can. When I do that, life seems to light up somehow.

Speeding through life

I’ve noticed that people who have a hard time don’t quite reach the levels of success they’d like, or the relationships or money they want. They are also the ones who forget to add beauty to their lives.

I have also noticed that these same people also have a tendency to speed through their lives as if they are being chased by some huge expectation … that they simultaneously believe they will never attain!

Speeding through life produces an inability to appreciate your surroundings, your relationships, yourself or what you do accomplish.

Without appreciation, how can you thrive?

You can’t – at least not as fully as you would, otherwise.

Think of the word “appreciation.”

The root word from which it is derived means “precious.”

To appreciate is to make precious, dear to your heart. Imagine if you stopped long enough during your day to appreciate your feet, and how they carry you all over the place. Even though you give them so little attention, there they are doing your work.

  • What could you do for your feet today that would make them (and you!) feel delicious?
  • What could you do for your friend today that would help him or her feel great?
  • What can you do as best you can that would make you feel like you accomplished something today?

That’s living artfully.

Think of your kitchen. It’s where all the food in your life comes in, gets stored, cleaned, and prepared for your life fuel. How much do you appreciate your kitchen? What would it take to stand in the middle of that kitchen and look around, radiating appreciation to the counter tops, the sink, the fridge, the floor? Not much!

Try it and see how that feels.

Then do it with other places in your house. You’ll notice that there will be places you’ll want to clean up a bit, maybe move some furniture around, open windows. Don’t be so anxious to do it right away, though.

Give the room your love first, and ask yourself, if I were to really love myself, and live artfully, appreciating and doing everything the best I could, how would I like this room to be?

Make mental notes as you go through your day as to what you could slow down, take a breath in and out, and appreciate. Then do it. Doesn’t have to take long at all!

Make mental notes about what you’d like to change in your house, your behavior, your relationships, your business. Make changes gradually, and celebrate them and how those changes make you feel.

Note and appreciate the people, things, and places that you want to honor for having stood by you for a long time. Even take a second to write a line of appreciation on a card and send it off to one of those people.

THAT is living artfully: create your life on purpose, in beauty and appreciation.

I know you can do it, and that the more you do, the better you’ll feel. And the better you feel, the better your life will be, day by day by day.

I Love Susan Boyle’s Big Eyebrows! And her Voice? Oh My….

SUSAN-BOYLE

You probably saw the big hoo-ha when Susan Boyle, the power-voiced gal who made such a hit on the Britain’s Got Talent show, came on stage.

If not, check this out for some real inspiration.

The judges and people in the audience made faces, raised their eyebrows and had clear disappointment and doubts that she could be any good.

Shame on them!

Frankly, I felt embarrassed for the judges and the people in the audience who were so quick to judge Susan Boyle on her looks – she certainly doesn’t have a thing to do with skinny legs, belly-button rings or silky-sexy clothes!

The sheer arrogance of both audience and judges wa astounding – like someone who isn’t dressed in designer clothing can’t possibly have anything to contribute, oh no! Good grief. Where have we come in our supposed culture that we reserve talent for the Pretties?!?

Surprise surprise!

The second she opens her mouth in song, it’s as if a tsunami of energy swamps the hall – within seconds people are on their feet crying, laughing, clapping, yelling in joy and full of the same enormous spirit Susan is radiating. And they keep clapping and shouting for her until after the song is done! Every time I watch it I feel full of the magic and tears and the sheer authenticity of the woman.

There are those who say the staging and setup are all hype; who say she hasn’t got what it takes to go beyond her ’15 minutes of fame;’ that she needs to get ‘with it’ with her clothes and media-presence.

Why? What’s wrong with her the way she is?

Why do we insist that people fit in to our narrow ideals so WE can be comfortable?!? I think she’s more savvy and honest and grounded than the next person, and knows in her heart far better what to do than the flight of pretties who come and go every year.

Susan’s birth was apparently a hard one, with resulting oxygen deprivation and minor brain damage. Perhaps that’s what has kept this golden canary in the shadow so long, not flitting out of the nest as soon as she knew she had a voice that could thrill.

I hope she has all kinds of people around her who can steady her hand amidst the glitz and glimmer and onslaught of media, because if she can sing like she did on that stage, I want to hear more. She has the posture and presence of an opera singer, and belts her song out from the very center of her heart – who could ask for  more?

Frumpy? Or distinct?

Who cares if her eyebrows are thick and powerful? Who cares if her dress is 50s and she walks like an excited five-year old? I think she looked like the embodiment of Heart. Who needs another skimpily-S&M-dressed Madonna or Britney? I say keep those eyebrows!

One report called her a ‘frumpy spinster’ – critics and reviewers somehow feel they have the unalienable right to cut people and their works down in razor-thin slivers. Does it make them feel better to be so denigrating and nasty? If those same people calling her those names were on the stage, I can assure you they’d feel crushed by such comments.

This was a great example of how, when we let our judgments and prejudices and cultural beliefs cloud our eyes, we can be shaken out of our trees in a split second. What a fabulous surprise Susan Boyle is! We should be so lucky as to have her in our lifetime!

No more cynicism!

No more arrogance!

No more judging books by covers!

Yes more asking for and claiming your Dreams – go Susan!

Electrical Tapping

ATL-inspired

I told you I’d share with you the electrical tapping that helped me start me feeling like I was getting somewhere on the road to recovery from the time I became so ill after breathing paint fumes. (Oh, by the way, the gold paint pen I was using is by KRYLON. Avoid it like crazy, and especially keep it away from your kids!)

I was lying in bed, drifting in and out, feeling like a puzzle someone had thrown on the floor in little pieces. I felt as if I had no internal structure–my bones felt shattered, and the cohesiveness of the connective unions of brain synapses, muscles, tendons and everything felt broken. It was truly weird–like I was a toy about to be put together.

So I just laid there and visualized a kind of map, like my body’s original blueprint. You know those books you see overlays of transparent pages with muscle, fascia and bone and organs? It was like that. And I imagined that there were little energy threads connecting everything. Read more to find out what I said as I tapped, and to see a tapping chart.Read More
