Trauma doesn’t have to be huge to be impactful, but if not treated right or well, the event and aftermath, and ideas and beliefs around the incident can define the rest of a person’s life.

Rehana Webster: World-wide Trauma Buster Expert

TBT-WEBSTERI’ve been watching as my friend and good buddy Rehana Webster, who is a world-class expert at handling trauma she travels the world – lately to remote locations deep within the rugged mountains of Pakistan (see the photo below, where she navigates the rickety bridges over treacherous rivers!).

bridgeRehana works with women who have had acid poured into their faces, who were raped, molested or abused, and even women who have been targeted to be killed in ‘honor’ killings.

Rehana uses her unique techniques for busting trauma to help them come back emotionally from such extreme trauma to reclaim their minds and emotions, and live better lives.

Why is this work so important?

Rehana told me that, in her experience, 90% of Pakistan’s population needs help with shock and trauma release. Imagine almost an entire country suffering shock and trauma. That’s serious business!

Fight, Flight or Freeze…

Have you ever noticed how someone who is upset can’t think straight until they get their nerves calmed down? There’s a very good reason for that. They’re in survival mode – Fight, Flight or Freeze.

We’re wired that way. Why? Because when you’re fleeing an enemy or attacker, what do you need to think about other than get safe, get safe, get safe? Our F-F-F mode kicks in so we can get to some kind of safety and survive even the most horrific experiences.

You’re not really safe yet…

mountainsBut once a person gets to a safe place where she can breathe a sign of relief, the strangest thing happens: sometimes (most times) she can’t unwind by herself. She keeps freaking out, or having flashbacks, terrible dreams, or repetitive visions of what happened.

She may not be able to ‘get present,’ or may experience a level of extreme watchfulness for danger called hyper-vigilance.

Who do you know?

If you know any vets or women who have been brutally assaulted, or people who have gone through accidents, home invasion, domestic violence, rape, war experiences … you’ve seen trauma’s effects close at hand.

Zoe Walton: False Emotions & How to Relieve Depression

I read this newsletter by a friend, Zoe Walton, who helps her clients with EFT and Matrix Reimprinting, and thought you’d appreciate it. So I’m reproducing it here for you. Pretty important stuff.

From this point on, it’s Zoe talking:

zoeThis is about “False negative emotions” and neurotransmitters. True negative emotions are genuine responses to challenges and difficulties that arise in our life.

They are feelings of loss, disappointment, abuse, shame, etc, arising from the past or present. We grow from feeling and dealing with these types of emotions and situations. They are a natural response to life.

‘False emotions,’ a term coined by one of my teachers, Julia Ross, are caused by an imbalance of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. You might be tipped off that you are feeling false emotions because:

  1.  these emotions have no identifiable  cause
  2.  you just feel a low level of blues, hopelessness or anxiety;
  3.  you have been unsuccessful in resolving depression, anxiety, sadness, even with years of therapy;
  4.  you have problems sleeping through the night.

A neurotransmitter is a chemical messenger in the brain that carries, boosts, and modulates signals across gaps or synapses of brain cells and between other cells in the body. Most neurotransmitters are made from protein or its subunits, amino acids. Serotonin, Dopamine and GABA are neurotransmitters that are essential for a positive, calm, happy outlook and a sense of well-being.

When Neurotransmitters are out of balance (or when receptors on cells responsible for receiving neurotransmitter signals are impaired) they have a significant impact on our mood and behavior.

When we are deficient in specific neurotransmitters a number of emotional symptoms are likely:

  •     Deficits in serotonin can lead to depression, aggressiveness, anxiety, panic attacks, food and alcohol cravings, irritability and insomnia;
  •     Deficits of dopamine include depression, stress, mental exhaustion, fatigue, low sex drive and low motivation;
  •     Noradrenaline is important for alertness, concentration and attention. Deficits of noradrenaline have been linked to depression;
  •     Deficits in GABA can lead to feelings of anxiety.

Brain cells need three things to survive and be healthy:

  •     Oxygen (so exercise daily);
  •     Glucose ( the brain uses 20-25% of all the glucose we take in as food);
  •     Stimulation – Neurotransmitters help to keep your brain cells healthy by stimulating them. Stimulation of brain cells lead to ATP production, this is the energy that runs all the billions of functions in your body.

If you are deficient in a particular neurotransmitter you will experience very specific emotions, sleep patterns and cravings. You can increase the amount of a particular neurotransmitter in your brain by taking some amino acid supplements. I have been doing this work with clients for 6 years with great success.

If you suspect you might be feeling false emotions due to imbalanced brain chemicals, my recommendation is to start with the following suggestions prior to embarking on a specific amino acid protocol.

  1.   Eat 4 oz of protein (about a chicken breast size of meat) three times per day. Or eat 40-50 grams of protein per day of you are a woman or 50-60 grams if you are a man. Write down your menu of a few typical days’ diet, then Google “protein content of foods” and check to see if you are getting enough protein.
  2.   Make sure you are either eating a ton of veggies to get your vitamins and minerals, or supplement what veggies you do eat with a good Multi Vitamin. Neurotransmitters are made from protein but they need “Co-Factors” ( B Vitamins, zinc etc.) to facilitate their cross-over to other brain cells.
  3.   Take Omega 3’s (fish oil, flax seed oil) because the brain needs Omega 3 to make Neurotransmitters.

Here are some reasons, and I am sure there are more, why you may be experiencing an imbalance of neurotransmitters:

  1.   Genetics- take a good look at your family members. If most of them are anxious or depressed, this may point to a genetic deficiency in one or more of the neurotransmitters
  2.   The standard American Diet- does not supply the proper nutrition needed to turn food into neurotransmitters and co factors
  3.   Dieting or eating Disorders- you may not be eating enough protein and vitamins because you are dieting or restricting food intake
  4.   Prolonged Stress will deplete neurotransmitters
  5.   Toxic substances like heavy metals, pesticides, illicit and some prescription drugs can cause permanent damage to the nerves that make neurotransmitters.
  6. This is can be a stressful season, so get plenty of rest, take time for yourself, and eat well.

How My Ma Lived Artfully and Why I Never Paint Gory Stuff

When I was a child, I admired the fact that my mother was a professional artist.

She painted stark watercolor land and seascapes, inspired by the windswept beaches, watering holes and harbors up and down the New England coast that she and my dad sailed through.

She was often commissioned to do pastel portraits of our friends, neighbors and their kids. I remember going with her to the portrait sittings and playing with the siblings of the kids who were sitting. We were all bored, and made fun by creating our own portraits. That’s where it all began for me.

This is one of her watercolors of Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island, where we lived.

I wasn’t such a huge fan of her portraits, but I loved how she could get across the idea of the glassy water of Bar Harbor, Maine using one swipe of her brush, or the freedom of a gull in the air with only a squiggle made perfectly, freely just-so. Because of her, I started drawing at age six, and never stopped.

Gory stuff

I used to pore through her art history books, study her sketches, snitch any old art materials it looked like she’d abandoned, and practice on her scraps of paper.

goyaOne of the things I remember clearly about her books were the gory, hideous war paintings from before World War I.

I didn’t realize that at the time that they were painted, drawings and paintings were the only way that anyone could communicate what was happening to people in one part of the world to the people in another.

Instantaneous communication is so now ubiquitous – even back then in the 50s with our dial phones, radio and the beginnings of TV – that I thought it was just sheer perversity that anyone would want to paint such subjects.

I misunderstood the function of art before radio and TV. I didn’t get that Goya’s paintings and Daumier’s drawings were like newspapers today, conveying what was going on at the time.

If you look back at their amazing work: Francisco Goya (see here) and Honore Daumier (see here), could have unquestionably been Pulitzer prize reporters for their eras. Nonetheless, I was dismayed by their subject matter – most of which was far milder than what is “normal” to see in the media today.

Not for me

I decided that I’d never paint or carve anything so gruesome. I wanted to see color, light, delight, soul, depth, honesty, courage, beauty, inspiration, power, connection to the divine. I decided, too, that I had to go beyond just making art – I wanted to live my life artfully, as well – although I really didn’t know quite how to do that yet.

Over the years since those days, I have made a practice of just that: trying to live my life as artfully as I can. I’ve found that attempting to make each thing I do perfect leads to stagnation, boredom and huge anxiety (will it be good enough; can I do it?). Instead, I just slow myself down a fraction to be able to breathe in and out, look at what I’m doing or the person I’m with, then appreciate them as much as I can. When I do that, life seems to light up somehow.

Speeding through life

I’ve noticed that people who have a hard time don’t quite reach the levels of success they’d like, or the relationships or money they want. They are also the ones who forget to add beauty to their lives.

I have also noticed that these same people also have a tendency to speed through their lives as if they are being chased by some huge expectation … that they simultaneously believe they will never attain!

Speeding through life produces an inability to appreciate your surroundings, your relationships, yourself or what you do accomplish.

Without appreciation, how can you thrive?

You can’t – at least not as fully as you would, otherwise.

Think of the word “appreciation.”

The root word from which it is derived means “precious.”

To appreciate is to make precious, dear to your heart. Imagine if you stopped long enough during your day to appreciate your feet, and how they carry you all over the place. Even though you give them so little attention, there they are doing your work.

  • What could you do for your feet today that would make them (and you!) feel delicious?
  • What could you do for your friend today that would help him or her feel great?
  • What can you do as best you can that would make you feel like you accomplished something today?

That’s living artfully.

Think of your kitchen. It’s where all the food in your life comes in, gets stored, cleaned, and prepared for your life fuel. How much do you appreciate your kitchen? What would it take to stand in the middle of that kitchen and look around, radiating appreciation to the counter tops, the sink, the fridge, the floor? Not much!

Try it and see how that feels.

Then do it with other places in your house. You’ll notice that there will be places you’ll want to clean up a bit, maybe move some furniture around, open windows. Don’t be so anxious to do it right away, though.

Give the room your love first, and ask yourself, if I were to really love myself, and live artfully, appreciating and doing everything the best I could, how would I like this room to be?

Make mental notes as you go through your day as to what you could slow down, take a breath in and out, and appreciate. Then do it. Doesn’t have to take long at all!

Make mental notes about what you’d like to change in your house, your behavior, your relationships, your business. Make changes gradually, and celebrate them and how those changes make you feel.

Note and appreciate the people, things, and places that you want to honor for having stood by you for a long time. Even take a second to write a line of appreciation on a card and send it off to one of those people.

THAT is living artfully: create your life on purpose, in beauty and appreciation.

I know you can do it, and that the more you do, the better you’ll feel. And the better you feel, the better your life will be, day by day by day.

Do You Have Great, Unshakable Support for Your Life?

One of the most precious things that can help make your life as great as you wish it to be is an unshakable support system.

Whether that consists of your family, friends, co-workers, business team or a great coach, that support is essential.

These are the people (or person) to whom you can go and feel safe, and by whom you feel loved and uplifted.

With them, you can open your heart, let your hurts fall out on the floor for examination and healing, without any judgement or criticisms or you-should-haves.

They stand by you

They love and support you with massive amounts of love as you be with that pile of scary stuff, deal with it, and decide what to do next.

They stand by you as you go through and transform your circumstances, attitudes, thoughts, or situations so you end up feeling good, so you feel open and delighted again.

hugYou know for certain that they have the uplifting energy and sweet, unbiased love and support that only someone who believes in you can give you.

You know for sure that, even if they don’t have any solutions for your problem, any new perspective through which to look, they still love you without judgement. And that they will be with you until and as you choose something new, something that does work for you.

You also know that, even if you don’t don’t like what they have to say, they will tell you the truth of their own experience; they will give you their opinion and perspective; and they will tell you how they feel.

And you know that they will never insist that you do anything their way–that yes, they’ll have their say, but they know that you need to make your own decisions that may even be in direct opposition to what they say or would do, themselves.

To have a person in your life
who will be this for you is mighty precious.

It’s a gift beyond measure. It’s like having a rock to lie down on in the sun and breathe in new light and life. It’s strength where there seemed, before, to be none. It’s a line to life when life itself seems impossible. It’s a mirror for the depth of your own power, the power that takes you where ever you want to go.

These are the kind of people who ask you what you’d like to get out of this situation, rather than joining you in blame, shame, resentment or pity parties. You’ve found a gem. What a gift!

Do you have a person like that?

If not, I invite you to become one, yourself, to at least one person.

You’ll find out what it’s like, to be that generous, that kind, that truthful. It will grow you faster than you can even begin to imagine. And one day you’ll see that you’ve had people like this in your life the whole time–you just never knew it. You just never recognized them.

If you do you have people in your life who love you and support you, who make you feel safe and like you can do anything you set your mind to, then send them love and gratitude, because they need it, too!

I send you an ocean of love.

 

Annabel Fisher: Courage and Determination Help Her Found AAMET

She had been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and was very painfully going about her life feeling ill, exhausted and in a wheelchair. I suffered from suicidal depression. We were both filled with anger, fear and resentment–and ended up clearing it all.

OK, you’ve heard of people using tapping to get rid of illnesses, depression and pain before, but I bet you didn’t know that, for a while, tapping felt like it was making things worse for us both!

Backwards? Huh?

I had been tapping for 4 or 5 weeks (this was 2002, when I was an Artist-in-Residence living in New Zealand), and I thought I was the only one this seemingly backwards experience happened to, and felt very discouraged. Why Am I Not Getting the Tapping Success I want?

I get notes all the time from folks with questions about how to use EFT, or MTT, as many are calling it now, or just plain tapping. I’ll refer to it as tapping from now on.

And no, we’re not talking about tap dancing! Gotta have a little fun now and then, yes?

This week someone asked me what to do if you don’t seem to be getting results tapping.

Here are just a few aspects to this question that can help you resolve the dilemma.

A. What is it you don’t like?

First, identify what’s going on that you don’t like. Like, I lost my job, my husband’s having an affair, I feel ugly, I can’t make enough (or any!) money as an enterpreneur.

Those are all what I call umbrella issues that are too broad to tap on and get good results without looking at some details.

B. Where do you feel it?

What I want you to do is duck under the umbrella and pick out the places where you feel ughy. Like, it felt awful to be yelled at when I was fired. I hated myself when I shouted at my kid. I feel so anxious about marketing my business.

C. Name it

Zero down a bit more, and name how you felt – I was so ticked off, I was so ashamed, I felt so humiliated.

D. What’s your body doing?

Now, how did you *know* you felt that way? Did you blush to your hair-roots? Were you clenching your fists, did your heart feel like it was going to blast our of your chest, did you stop breathing? Pin it down so you know some exact symptoms.

E. Rate it

Then, rate how intense those symptoms, or  feelings, are, with 0 being the least and 10 the most. WRITE it down, because you’ll be amazed to see your rating after you’ve tapped, and may not even believe you had anything going on at all in the first place!

F. Tap

Now you have solid, identifiable things upon which to tap: even though my heart felt like it was bursting when he yelled at me…I didn’t want to cry so my chest felt tight and I couldn’t breathe….

NOTE:

If you’re a practitioenr, send your new clients there to check it out before their first session with you – it will save you tremendous time having to explain the points, how it works, etc.

Fa. Then be sure to say you accept yourself. If you can’t say that without your mind balking, tap on even though I can’t accept myself until you can say it and be pleased by saying it. Then continue the original session.

Fb. If you are one of those people who can’t seem to feel, then use the word *think* – what did you think when he yelled at you? What do you think about being a home business owner? Many times that will help get the right words. It helps guys a lot, and people who tend to be more mental or academic.

It’s in the details.

If you don’t know how you feel, look to where your body hurts or has tension. If you don’t know how your body feels, look to memories, what people said to you, what you think about something. Get the details. You’ll be able to get real results using these hints. Get the details. Get the details.

And remember: it’s all energy.

No matter what’s going on, it’s just energy, and you can tap it into being useful, productive and creative even if it *looks* disruptive, limiting and deadly right now. It’s just energy. Choose creativity!
