Trauma doesn’t have to be huge to be impactful, but if not treated right or well, the event and aftermath, and ideas and beliefs around the incident can define the rest of a person’s life.

My friends Deborah D. Miller, PhD. and Jondi Whitis, MToT, both highly experienced energy workers who love to work with kids, have written a new book, Emotional First-Aid for Children, that give us simple, easy ways to practice for, and handle, trauma.

Why is this work so important?

Rehana told me that, in her experience, 90% of Pakistan’s population needs help with shock and trauma release. Imagine almost an entire country suffering shock and trauma. That’s serious business!

Fight, Flight or Freeze…

Have you ever noticed how someone who is upset can’t think straight until they get their nerves calmed down? There’s a very good reason for that. They’re in survival mode – Fight, Flight or Freeze.

We’re wired that way. Why? Because when you’re fleeing an enemy or attacker, what do you need to think about other than get safe, get safe, get safe? Our F-F-F mode kicks in so we can get to some kind of safety and survive even the most horrific experiences.

You’re not really safe yet…

mountainsBut once a person gets to a safe place where she can breathe a sign of relief, the strangest thing happens: sometimes (most times) she can’t unwind by herself. She keeps freaking out, or having flashbacks, terrible dreams, or repetitive visions of what happened.

She may not be able to ‘get present,’ or may experience a level of extreme watchfulness for danger called hyper-vigilance.

Who do you know?

If you know any vets or women who have been brutally assaulted, or people who have gone through accidents, home invasion, domestic violence, rape, war experiences … you’ve seen trauma’s effects close at hand.

Trauma settles in the cells

What Must You Include When You Build Your Treasure Map?

What is the one (most important) thing most people forget about when they do a Treasure Map?

People create treasure maps, mind maps, time-lines, PERT (Project Evaluation Review Technique) Charts, ad infinitum.

And they get real success with their mapping, I might add. I know I have, personally, many times: it’s how I create all of my business sites, books, and marketing campaigns.

Being a coach and executive success trainer, I see literally hundreds of people taking classes and trainings on how to make your dreams come true, how to manifest, how to make money, how to get your perfect man…you name it. I’ve seen it, as I am sure you have, too.

We know that clearly visualizing something stimulates the Reticular Activating System in the brain. This stimulation creates real vibrational frequencies that the brain then continues to radiate. According to the principles of attraction, these frequency emissions “attract” the reality we want to create right to us.

There’s a major factor that is imperative to take into account in order to boost your Treasure Mapping success: your emotions, because it’s best go into a manifesting process in as highly optimized state as you can create: excited about what you want to create, enthusiastic, curious, expansive, willing to embrace your new concepts and experiences.

Caught up!

I have seen people get caught up by the so-called negative emotions that emerge when they make their Treasure Maps. Suddenly, doubt has entered the scene. (It’s OK, though – you’ll see!)

I’ve heard: “I can’t succeed; I’ll never have any money (my dream house/mate/job, etc).”

Or, “Making this Treasure Map won’t work.”

Or “I don’t really expect to be successful.”

Being able to recognize and receive the success that is right there for you is also important, but your ability to do so can be blocked by limiting thoughts and beliefs.

Those emotions can range from fear of having success, fear of failure, anger that they were never allowed to have these things, anxiety that “this will never work,” “my husband will think I’m silly,” “my wife won’t believe this,” “I could never have a house like this,” etc. There can be as many fears as each picture on the Maps.

“Ah!” I hear you say. “But that’s just part of life, and you just need to ignore those and push on through!”

Yes, emotions are, indeed part of life.

And no, just pushing through doesn’t get it. Doesn’t work. At ALL.

Why? I’ll show you. It’s a complete waste of energy and your own personal power to ignore and push back your feelings. Let’s look at this:

There you are standing at the Treasure Map table, with your blank poster board, magazines, scissors and glue. You just cut out an image of a gorgeous house on the beach. You’re holding it in your hand, considering where on the poster board to put it. The house is a close copy of the one you’ve wanted for years.

And you’re suddenly in tears. Huh? Why are you crying?

There are very good reasons you’re crying.

But here’s where most people go wrong. Instead of being present with and appreciating the emotion, they try to stop the feelings. They sheepishly look around, feeling embarrassed and foolish for “being so emotional.” They try to go on with their mapping.

But when they do that, they’ve lost out on a gift of power their own energetic system was trying to give them!

Let’s go back.

There you are again, with your map in front of you. You feel the emotion coming on.

Instead of holding your breath and trying not to cry, you say to yourself, “Wow, I’m feeling so much energy right now!” without naming the feeling sad, angry, fear, anxiety. No names, OK?

Just notice that you are feeling energy out of proportion to what you normally experience.

As you notice, tap with your index and 2nd fingers on the tips of your collarbones right at the bottom of your neck. This is a major meridian point. Tapping there stimulates it, smoothing out your internal energy system.

As you continue to tap:

Look to see: where is the feeling in your body? Do you have:
Clammy hands?
Sweaty hands?
Tight throat?
Weak in the knees?
Tight belly and chest?

Pin point it

Find exactly where it is and pinpoint it.

Then describe it:
How big is it?
If it had a color, what would it be?
If it could make a noise, what would it sound like?
If it had texture, what would it be?
How is it feeling in your body?

Some people feel feelings that are actually outside of their bodies! The feeling can be in front of them, to the side, or above or below them, with colors, sounds, etc.

Now that you have pinpointed and examined this feeling, pretend that you can speak with it and that it will answer you. Ask it what its purpose is.

Nine times out of ten, these feelings are fear-related to some event in the past, and stick around to help you avoid anything that will mean feeling or having the same kind of experience again.

It’s main function has been to protect you! Odd, isn’t it?

Time to say thanks

So now that you are a big girl or boy, all grown up, it’s time for you to thank that feeling for protecting you.

Tell it that it’s inappropriate for you to keep behaving as you did as a scared child, and you want to make your own choices about whether or not you are in danger anymore. So you will make 2 requests of it:

1. To shed the fear (sadness, anger, etc) factor, and come on along as an ally, rather than a preventor. Most times the energy will say yes.

2. To agree with you on some way it can warn you about what it thinks of as danger, and yet lets you remain in charge. Like, instead of making your belly tight and you start cringing and crying, it can simple say in your mind, “Watch out!” Or show you a red flag. Or make chills go up your back.

Now that you have thanked that feeling, and have released your judgements about it, look to see what it’s like now. Most people report that it looks lighter, smoother, more pleasant and supportive.

Are you still tapping? Good! Feels better now, doesn’t it! You can stop now, and check how much better your feel, just from reading this report!

All it was was energy that had gotten stuck in your system – twisted or turned to the point that it was backwards to your intended outcome.

Now that you can turn your energy around, look at that picture of your house and say, “Wow! Yes! Of course I can have that!” Which, of course, is true!

Think of the word: emotion:
E = outwards
motion = movement of energy

It’s just energy.

Take the judgement off, and look at it as sheer, undiluted energy that you could harness and use for your own.

Now you can take that energy and use it to create,
or continue living, your Dream!

It’s easy to see how utilizing the energy that was previously blocking you can give you an enormous boost. I hope you’ll use that boost each time you feel something that you don’t like.

REMEMBER:

Not liking how you feel is a good indication that there is stuck energy in your system. That you can clear it, harvest it and use it creatively!

Isn’t it amazing that all this time you have avoided feeling bad without understanding that those very feelings were trying to let you know that there was a jam to be cleared up?

Now you know what to do:
Notice you’re feeling “bad” – having one of those “negative” emotions.
Tap on your collarbone.
Check out where the feeling is in your body (or outside of it).
Get a good idea of where it is, what it looks, sounds and feels like.
Ask it why it’s there.
Make a new deal with it.
Decide what you want to do with all that new energy!

Now get back to your poster board, it’s waiting!

Sudden and Extreme Out of the Blue Breakfast Ecstacy

I recently had an experience of extreme ecstasy – eating breakfast!

I have a small semi-enclosed area by my house which I use as a studio. When the weather is nice, that’s where I like to eat, sitting in my big comfy chair.

For some reason, I got a wild hair last week and bought Raisin Bran and milk. I virtually never eat cereal or milk, so who knows where that urge came from!

As I was sitting there munching…

I was thinking about how fortunate I felt about having come through a certain hospital bout so easily, and for having really created a foundation for feeling happy despite what went on around me.

I thought of that phrase, “we’re all One.”

Well, I thought, if we really are all One, then there is no separation from me and anything or anyone else.

I put the spoon in my mouth, and suddenly the universe slowed down to a crawl, and I experienced a kind of a flattening – how to describe this – it was as if nothing stood out as any more or less important than anything else, and everything was divinely given, divinely provided.

A Gift

The spoon and cereal became a Gift of the Universe itself, and as I slid it over my tongue, my “regular” perception of my-hand-holding-spoon-feeding-my-face became Universe-feeding-my-soul.

It was as if my hand disappeared, and the food floated there all by itself, ready for me to nurture myself with, almost as a babe does at the breast.

Somehow I was able to extend the experience for about five bite-chew-swallows. It shook me to my roots. My body was trembling and tears were streaming down my face, and my heart felt like it would burst, and for once my chatty mind was completely still.

I felt so happy I was sure I’d explode!

It’s such a strange thing that I had the urge to buy and eat food that, in the past, gave me belly aches, and that I haven’t eaten in at least 30 years. Spirit works in strange ways!

Here’s to bliss for you, too!

Electrical Tapping

I told you I’d share with you the electrical tapping that helped me start me feeling like I was getting somewhere on the road to recovery from the time I became so ill after breathing paint fumes. (Oh, by the way, the gold paint pen I was using is by KRYLON. Avoid it like crazy, and especially keep it away from your kids!)

I was lying in bed, drifting in and out, feeling like a puzzle someone had thrown on the floor in little pieces. I felt as if I had no internal structure–my bones felt shattered, and the cohesiveness of the connective unions of brain synapses, muscles, tendons and everything felt broken. It was truly weird–like I was a toy about to be put together.

So I just laid there and visualized a kind of map, like my body’s original blueprint. You know those books you see overlays of transparent pages with muscle, fascia and bone and organs? How One Tomato Saved My Life When I Thought I was A-Goner

I knew I was dying. 

It had been five days since I had eaten, and in that time, I’d only been able to keep the tiniest of licks of water down. Fasting wasn’t a problem. No water, however, was.

It was mid-August, 1984, and a week before, as a representative for the Kauai yachting association that held a certain trans-pacific race every two years, I had welcomed a father – son team who had come in second in the double-handed (only two people on the boat) race.

I helped them unboard, carry gear, trash, dirty laundry and empty supply containers up to the docking station where everyone was busily meeting, greeting and celebrating. They still had wobbly sea legs after two weeks on the water, so we went slowly on up to the club house. As soon as they were set, I went on down to the next boat that was just now pulling into the marina, never dreaming I’d be on that boat again soon….

“I’ll go!”

On the muggy tropical awards night a couple days later, by chance I was placed next to Jerry, the father I had welcomed. His son had flown back to the mainland already. Jerry told me he was looking for a crew to sail his boat back to California with him.

Before I could stop my mouth, I said, “I’ll go!”

Huh? I had a sales job in a gallery 6 days a week, and my kids were about to come back from visiting their dad to get ready for school – hello, Angela? My inner critic screamed, “how can you even think about going?”

“I’ll go!” I said again.

I over-rode my inner critic. She was always trying to put a damper on everything! I decided right then and there that this was a trip of a lifetime and I wasn’t about to pass it up. So, since the sail would take 25 to 27 days, I got a month lay-off from my boss, handled the logistics for my kids and house. Two days later, Jerry and I set off.

I was excited and terrified.

I was a good sailor – I’d been sailing since before I was born, and was utterly comfortable on boats, on the water and in it. But I’d never sailed across an ocean!

I’d never experienced a minute of seasickness. But the second we left Nawiliwili Harbor, I almost passed out when waves of extreme nausea took over my entire world.

Jerry suggested I go below decks and rest a bit, but I wanted to see the ocean and the way the sun climbed the sky over my rapidly shrinking island home. I was OK if I stood up, but if I sat down, I was a mess. If only I’d had EFT!

Eventually I did lie down, because over the next three days the nausea got worse and worse. I could stand up and I could lie down, but sitting made my world a dizzy hell. I got tired really fast and couldn’t hold a thing down. On that first day, I lost every last fragment of anything in my belly in the most unpleasant ways.

By the morning of the fifth day…

I knew that I’d die of hypothermia if something didn’t change. I was lying in my bunk, fully dressed, with my down jacket on inside my down sleeping bag. I felt one minute like I was submerged in Arctic ice, the next in the fires of hell.

I kept wondering why me? What have I ever done to deserve this? How did an experienced sailor get seasick all of a sudden? How my brothers would tease me if they ever found out! Thoughts and feelings of anger, guilt, sadness, shame and grief swirled through my water-deprived and nutritionally unbalanced brain.

Jerry came below and said something that made no sense to me, and left shaking his head. I realized somehow that I must be delirious. I suddenly had a feeling that if I died out there in the middle of the ocean, now five days out from Kauai, he wouldn’t turn around and return my body to shore.

I decide!

It was at that moment that I really got it that I had to make a sharply defined decision.

It was no longer about how stupid I was for going of lickety-split with a perfect stranger, no matter how good his credentials were. It was no longer about why I was seasick. It was no longer about whether I could make it through or what people might think or even what Jerry might do.

It was all about “WOULD I make it through?”

Would I make the decision, then and there, to do what it took, no matter what?

I decided that a tomato would be my savior.

I had done a lot of multiple-day fasting in my 20s, and each time I had had stewed tomatoes to break the fast. (I’ve been told that probably wasn’t the greatest ida, but since I no longer fast it’s not a problem anymore, is it?)

I pulled out the ripest tomato in our meager fresh veggie stores. It looked like life itself, embodied. It was plump and red, and smelled really good, but one thought of eating it and my poor wrecked stomach flipped over a few times.

I closed my eyes and said to my deepst self…

“You’re going to do this, and you’re going to live, so shut up about nausea anymore. Thank you.” And bit a tiny little hole in the skin.

Over the next couple of hours, I had to fight for each little drop of juice to stay down. At the end of three hours I could take a bite.

Finally, I had eaten the whole thing, and I knew – I KNEW – I’d be OK. I feel alseep and woke up in time to relieve Jerry for the midnight watch. From then on, I didn’t experience even a fraction of nausea or dizziness, and even took over the cooking.

Creating realities

In quantum physics, it is said that multiple realities exist simultaneously. I know you’ve heard that before. But until I was thinking lately about my experience sailing across to California so long ago, I couldn’t quite get what they meant when they talked about how the universe collapses into a reality.

Why use the word “collapse”?

I had a sudden vision of the scenes in the movie, “What the Bleep,” where all those bubbles of realities were floating around, each one with a choice of reality in it. I saw that once I made my choice to live, to keep that tomato at my mouth, to refuse to let my body vomit each succeeding drop of juice, all the other bubbles of reality had collapsed into the one I had chosen to experience.

It was a real leap of faith to choose to live – especially since over the next 22 days spent tacking across the wide Pacific, without seeing one other human being or boat anywhere, not even one single contrail above us, we got becalmed in the Doldrums, the engine broke down when we tried to motor out of them, a storm blew out our mainsail and I almost fell overboard retrieving it. And by the time we got to Santa Cruz, we were virtually on our last cup of water. I could have died in multiple other ways, but I was appalled to think I might die of nausea and hypothermia!

What saved me?

First, I’m a survivor. I want to LIVE.

Secondly and right on top of that, it was my sharply defined decision.

How I felt was this: not only do I want to live, I want to do it NOW, no holds barred, get out of my way, I will do what I know is best for me, I will do what it takes.

My question to you

At a time when the world seems like it has fallen apart, it’s a US election year, the economy is blitzed, real estate is about to blow up, people are terrified about their finances and livelihoods, and no one is sure about a damn thing:

What sharply defined decision are you going to make right now that will allow you to not just stay alive, but thrive, to your soul’s deepest satisfaction and fulfillment?

We all know how to survive. We’ve been doing it on one level or the other for our entire lives.

This moment is a choice moment at the beginning of our calendar year – are you going to do same-old, same-old?

Or are you going to allow yourself to release your humor, brilliance, intelligence, beauty, uniqueness and vitality full-tilt and non-stop?

It ain’t about goals, folks. It’s about how you feel.

Work on your goals, and the list of to-dos you want to complete – but – that will be there even if you never think of it again.

How you feel is critical

Because how you feel is how you vibrate, and how you vibrate is how you attract!

This is my feel-list:

  • I am calm
  • I am relaxed
  • I am inspired
  • I am inspiring
  • I am delighted
  • I feel like am doing my life Right
  • I am grateful and fulfilled.

Maybe if I had felt like that on that fifth day out of Kauai, I might have been happy enough just to let go and die. But I doubt it! Too much fun to be had!

What’s your feels-list?

How do you want to feel about yourself, what you do, who you play and work with, your family, your body, your work, your finances, your fun?

How do you want to feel at the end of the day as you fall asleep?

Those are the only important choices.

Because when you go for those choices to the preference over other, less-fulfilling ones, people who feel the same way will align with you and sing the same song, paint the same reality picture, create the same feeling along with you. And it will expand and grow and become resplendent.

This is the power of alignment in the attraction game. But you have to BE attractive before you can attract. And you can’t be attractive until you feel good!

List a few feelings you’d like to feel. Right now.

Then do one small thing that will help you feel that way.

Then do more – and more and more and more.

I dare you to live your magnificent brilliance!

Live it as much as you can every single moment – even when that means being silent and in the background, or resting, or simply receiving – it’s not always about being out there and assertive.

And remember – the rest of us love it when you live your life feeling great! It gives us hope, inspiration, and real, live permission to do the same, ourselves.

Dream3hI recently worked with a young friend who has just opened her first acupuncture clinic with another young woman. When they were setting up their business bank account, and the personal banker found our that yes, in fact, acupuncture was useful for headaches, she became a good referral source for them.

Now she has invited Joan to a bank-sponsored golf outing for small businesses. Joan is feeling kind of terrified! For one thing, she has never golfed. And she hates going to a group of people where she knows no one. Plus, her mind is throwing up all the self doubts she has ever collected about self worth and inadequacy.

She said, “When I was in acupuncture school I felt competent and I did a good job (except when I froze on exams!). But now, with my business, I have a hard time putting myself out there. I have trouble initiating conversations about what I do. I find myself assuming that people aren’t interested in listening to me. I feel like they are just humoring me when I talk.

I feel so inexperienced, and it brings up all my feelings of not being as good as other people.

My mind disconnects from my mouth and I begin to feel like I am talking gibberish. And then I start thinking, how can I feel justified in even asking for money for what I do? It is one thing to work with family and friends for free, but I fall into doubting that my services are worth what I am charging.

Help! How can I truly believe in the value of what I have to offer? And I don’t even know how to play golf!!”Read More

Transform Your Negative Feelings to Positive Creative Power

A couple of weeks ago, I was amazed that about 80% of the people I worked with were dealing with various shades of “I can’t.”

Here are some of the beliefs people had:
I can’t because if I do I’ll lose my family.
I can’t because I don’t have the money.
I can’t because I might succeed.
If I do I’ll be ridiculed within the scientific community.
I can’t because I’ll make so much money the government or someone will take it way.

Thing, is, once you get at the underlying messages all these fears carry, you’ll have the courage, skill and knowledge to laugh and do what you choose.

Here’s an example….

“Joe” said, “My family wants me to stay in my job as a house-painter because it has a steady salary. I hate it, and I know I can be successful running a landscaping business.

“I’m good at it, but I just don’t have the credit to ask for a loan, and I can’t afford to buy the equipment I need. I’m afraid my family will think I’m nuts, that I’m endangering them, and I’ll never hear the end of it from my father-in-law if I fail.”

I asked him how big his fear of failure was on a scale of 1 to 10. “20!” he said. “It makes my knees weak to think of my wife screaming at me and my kids being disappointed in me.”

And how big was his fear of asking the bank or someone in his family for a loan. Off the charts. “I know they don’t think my ideas are worth anything.”

And his fear that he couldn’t provide for his kids?
Another 20.

I had him imagine this picture: a giant wheelbarrow full of all his fear. Two 20s and an off-the-charts overflow of all this I-CAN’T energy. Not to mention the weak-in-the-knees feeling, the queasy belly, the sweat down his back.

“I hate it!” he said, as he described it to me. “I don’t want to feel this way! I want to do what my heart loves, and what I know how to do really well! I’m furious!”

We added that to the wheel-barrow, too. He then made it into a dump truck to be able to hold it all.

I knew he expected me to take him through some tapping with EFT (the Emotional Freedom Techniques – info at EFTBooks.com ).

But I waited a bit, and had him really feel the energy inside all those fears, anger and frustrations. This is a bit different from most EFT sessions where you are ordinarily coached to not suffer through the intensity.

Instead, I wanted to point out to him the enormity of the energy he was carrying around.

I asked him, “What if all that energy you’re feeling, plus the energy it takes to resist and hate feeling that way, was available to you for creativity, confidence and power?”

What a concept, no? He’d never thought of it that way.

“It’d be huge!” he said. “Man, what a waste it is that I’ve used it like this!”

So now we tapped, starting with the Karate Chop Point. Here are a couple diagrams of the face and torso tapping points if you’re unfamiliar with EFT.

We said as we tapped: even though:
I’m afraid of failure
my wife will scream at me and call me a dummy
and a no-good
I’ll feel small and useless and
I’m afraid I’ll start drinking again
my father-in-law thinks I’m just a jerk
I’ll never have his approval
I’ve never had it anyway
I hate feeling this way
I hate how stupid I feel
I feel so unsupported
and angry at them all
especially myself
I’m so afraid to let go and trust that my heart is right
I feel like such a chicken
no one appreciates me
I’m afraid to start stepping out of my job

Pretty real feelings. Hard to carry around for so long.

It turned out, after we got through all that, that he did have occasional invitations from people to do some landscaping for them, but he’d been too afraid to take them.

So we went though fear of calling them back, fear of rejection, fear of them laughing at him – until he finally started laughing and said, “I get it! All I need to do is take one fear at a time and turn it around into usable energy. I can do that!”

At the end of our session, I had him look at the Fear Dump Truck again.

“It’s gone! It’s a huge mountain of energy now!” he exclaimed. “It looks like new snow, clean and sparkling, and I can use it any time I want!”

He saw himself running and jumping right into the heart of the mountain, surrounding himself with energy and power and confidence, and allowing his heart to fill with clarity and enthusiasm for his dream.

Joe called me last night. He had me laughing as he told me he’d realized that he’d been so closed down that he had ignored his wife saying she wished he would “just get out of that stupid painting job.” Fear makes us blind!

He said, “I never even heard her say it! She told me she’s been wanting me to do something else because I’ve been so unhappy I’ve been a jerk. No wonder my father-in-law has hated me!”

Take your fear, anger, grief, blame, shame, self-pity, resentment, and self-hatred energy, pile it up where you can “see” it, do some tapping and clean it off, polish it up, and use it for your dreams. It works.

Don’t tell me you don’t have any of that! WE ALL do. It’s a gift! Think of the power in it! Hunt for every inch of it and turn it inside out.

Cascade Tapping – A new way to use EFT!

Cascade Tapping – A new way to use EFT! It’s powerful, sublime, and very effective. I’m calling it Cascade Tapping, because it feels like standing under a waterfall.

If you’ve ever been stuck in your thoughts, having a hard time feeling or saying what’s going on with you? That endless circle of thinking that takes you on a downward spiral of thoughts you just can’t seem to stop?

CASCADE TAPPING will help you get out of that loop and into feeling calm, delighted and inspired.

I’ve used Cascade Tapping for hundreds of people now (both in live sessions and in my teleclasses), and I’ve found that this way of tapping helps take them from thought to feeling in seconds.

It’s really very simple. Instead of jumping from one point to the next and tapping on each one 5 – 7 times, you move gently and gradually in little half-inch increments from one point to the next, only tapping on the incremental spots once (see diagram).

There are many variations and ideas about where to start, tapping but I like to start at the top of the head with very gentle circle of tapping, then trek on down to the third eye, and on down. No hard fast rules.

I’m finding that there’s an almost instant yawn or sigh factor for anxiety and fear, in particular. I do it while I’m driving in heavy weather and am calm almost immediately.

I’m including below part of one my Wealth Maverick teleclasses where we were tapping with M___ , who felt that “everyone can ‘do it’ (market themselves, have abundance, success, etc.) but me.” You’ll get an idea how to do the tapping from it.
