Ilanya Vanzant: How to Eliminate Toxic Thoughts & Emotions

world-summit-ilanya2

It’s happening! The eighth World Tapping Summit!

I invite you to check out and watch today’s Free Video!

In it, #1 New York Times Best-selling author and host of the hit TV show “Iyanla: Fix My Life” Iyanla Vanzant details how to eliminate toxic thoughts and emotions from your lifeGo here to see it now!

Some of what Iyanla shares with you in this interview:

•   How she started using Tapping to change her life nearly 15 years ago, and why she still loves this technique for creating personal change.  (And why she always uses this technique with people on her show, even though it’s not always shown!)

•   Why it’s important to increase your emotional “library” to be able to express and release stuck emotions.

•   The power of love: Why she believes that there is no wound deep enough that love cannot heal, and how you can make the oftentimes difficult shift to finally loving and accepting yourself.

•   How to overcome lack-consciousness.  Iyanla struggled with finances even when she was earning over a million dollars a year!  She’ll explain why you need to shift your energy and beliefs around money in order to be able to create abundance, regardless of how much you’re earning.

•   The difference between creating a boundary and a wall (hint: most people create walls, not boundaries).

And much more!

This is a heartfelt, laugh-out-loud video that I know you’ll love.  Go here to see it now!

You’ll get Free Video Access and FREE audio download access so that you can listen to this video on the go.

Home-made Hydration: How to Make Sugar-free Electrolytes

ELECTROLYTES

I found out something really important after I was well again after having had my gall bladder removed.

I was feeling dehydrated. I knew I needed minerals and electrolytes, but I didn’t want to get a commercial sugar-laced drink. I didn’t know what to do.

So I googled ‘how to make electrolytes,’ and found out that you can make your own hydrating drink simple as pie! All you do is take a quarter teaspoon of sea salt (no iodine) and add it to a cup of water with the juice of half a lemon: voila! Electrolytes! Hydration!

The article I read said that the lemon has nutrients and minerals that we need, and the salt and acidic juice make the right electric charge we need to rejuvenate the system. Cool.

So if you need electrolytes after getting worn down playing sports, getting through an illness or having extreme diarrhoea, this is a home remedy that really works.

It’s not at all bad tasting, and if your body needs electrolytes it will love drinking it. It’s safe for little kids–better, actually, because there isn’t a ton of sugar in it. Sugar upsets the electrolyte balance, weakening it (never mind the other things we already know sugar does to the system).

Disclaimer: No, I am not a doctor or physician. I’m telling you about this because it works for me. If you try it and get hurt in any way, it’s your responsibility, not mine!

Roberta Grimes: What Really Happens When We Cross Over?

GRIMESPrepare to be stunned by a completely different way of thinking about death and dying – full of love, passion and joy!

At 8 years old, Roberta had a surprise visit from someone she calls an emissary of the Light.

Subsequently, she has spent almost all her life focused on her fascination with what happens at and after death.

What does happen?

Years of research have shown her what happens at our cross over, and what is most important for us to do in this life.

I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t read her amazing book, The Fun of Dying, but her sincerity and her immense expertise come through loud and clear.

5 Levels of … what?

I was fascinated with her description of the 5 levels of the Summerland, the name she gives the place we go to after death IF we’re lucky and have done our internal work.

Which means, of course, the more we increase our spiritual frequencies in this life, the ‘higher’ we go after we die.

You’ll be interested in:

  • the real nature of the universe
  • why Roberta experienced a “spiritual void” and why that was such a gift to her
  • why she started out only reading research before the 1950s
  • how the information she shares with us is aligned with Quantum physics
  • what can go wrong in transition, and what happens to us if we pay attention to the wrong thing as we die!
  • why suicide is a completely futile way to try to escape your pain
  • why we ought to stop thinking of ourselves as mortal
  • who forgiveness is really for
  • what is Dark Matter and what is Dark Energy
  • what is the nature of god

What Must You Include When You Build Your Treasure Map?

map

What is the one (most important) thing most people forget about when they do a Treasure Map?

People create treasure maps, mind maps, time-lines, PERT (Project Evaluation Review Technique) Charts, ad infinitum.

And they get real success with their mapping, I might add. I know I have, personally, many times: it’s how I create all of my business sites, books, and marketing campaigns.

Being a coach and executive success trainer, I see literally hundreds of people taking classes and trainings on how to make your dreams come true, how to manifest, how to make money, how to get your perfect man…you name it. I’ve seen it, as I am sure you have, too.

We know that clearly visualizing something stimulates the Reticular Activating System in the brain. This stimulation creates real vibrational frequencies that the brain then continues to radiate. According to the principles of attraction, these frequency emissions “attract” the reality we want to create right to us.

There’s a major factor that is imperative to take into account in order to boost your Treasure Mapping success: your emotions, because it’s best go into a manifesting process in as highly optimized state as you can create: excited about what you want to create, enthusiastic, curious, expansive, willing to embrace your new concepts and experiences.

Caught up!

I have seen people get caught up by the so-called negative emotions that emerge when they make their Treasure Maps. Suddenly, doubt has entered the scene. (It’s OK, though – you’ll see!)

I’ve heard: “I can’t succeed; I’ll never have any money (my dream house/mate/job, etc).”

Or, “Making this Treasure Map won’t work.”

Or “I don’t really expect to be successful.”

Being able to recognize and receive the success that is right there for you is also important, but your ability to do so can be blocked by limiting thoughts and beliefs.

Those emotions can range from fear of having success, fear of failure, anger that they were never allowed to have these things, anxiety that “this will never work,” “my husband will think I’m silly,” “my wife won’t believe this,” “I could never have a house like this,” etc. There can be as many fears as each picture on the Maps.

“Ah!” I hear you say. “But that’s just part of life, and you just need to ignore those and push on through!”

Yes, emotions are, indeed part of life.

And no, just pushing through doesn’t get it. Doesn’t work. At ALL.

Why? I’ll show you. It’s a complete waste of energy and your own personal power to ignore and push back your feelings. Let’s look at this:

There you are standing at the Treasure Map table, with your blank poster board, magazines, scissors and glue. You just cut out an image of a gorgeous house on the beach. You’re holding it in your hand, considering where on the poster board to put it. The house is a close copy of the one you’ve wanted for years.

And you’re suddenly in tears. Huh? Why are you crying?

There are very good reasons you’re crying.

But here’s where most people go wrong. Instead of being present with and appreciating the emotion, they try to stop the feelings. They sheepishly look around, feeling embarrassed and foolish for “being so emotional.” They try to go on with their mapping.

But when they do that, they’ve lost out on a gift of power their own energetic system was trying to give them!

Let’s go back.

There you are again, with your map in front of you. You feel the emotion coming on.

Instead of holding your breath and trying not to cry, you say to yourself, “Wow, I’m feeling so much energy right now!” without naming the feeling sad, angry, fear, anxiety. No names, OK?

Just notice that you are feeling energy out of proportion to what you normally experience.

As you notice, tap with your index and 2nd fingers on the tips of your collarbones right at the bottom of your neck. This is a major meridian point. Tapping there stimulates it, smoothing out your internal energy system.

As you continue to tap:

Look to see: where is the feeling in your body? Do you have:
Clammy hands?
Sweaty hands?
Tight throat?
Weak in the knees?
Tight belly and chest?

Pin point it

Find exactly where it is and pinpoint it.

Then describe it:
How big is it?
If it had a color, what would it be?
If it could make a noise, what would it sound like?
If it had texture, what would it be?
How is it feeling in your body?

Some people feel feelings that are actually outside of their bodies! The feeling can be in front of them, to the side, or above or below them, with colors, sounds, etc.

Now that you have pinpointed and examined this feeling, pretend that you can speak with it and that it will answer you. Ask it what its purpose is.

Nine times out of ten, these feelings are fear-related to some event in the past, and stick around to help you avoid anything that will mean feeling or having the same kind of experience again.

It’s main function has been to protect you! Odd, isn’t it?

Time to say thanks

So now that you are a big girl or boy, all grown up, it’s time for you to thank that feeling for protecting you.

Tell it that it’s inappropriate for you to keep behaving as you did as a scared child, and you want to make your own choices about whether or not you are in danger anymore. So you will make 2 requests of it:

1. To shed the fear (sadness, anger, etc) factor, and come on along as an ally, rather than a preventor. Most times the energy will say yes.

2. To agree with you on some way it can warn you about what it thinks of as danger, and yet lets you remain in charge. Like, instead of making your belly tight and you start cringing and crying, it can simple say in your mind, “Watch out!” Or show you a red flag. Or make chills go up your back.

Now that you have thanked that feeling, and have released your judgements about it, look to see what it’s like now. Most people report that it looks lighter, smoother, more pleasant and supportive.

Are you still tapping? Good! Feels better now, doesn’t it! You can stop now, and check how much better your feel, just from reading this report!

All it was was energy that had gotten stuck in your system – twisted or turned to the point that it was backwards to your intended outcome.

Now that you can turn your energy around, look at that picture of your house and say, “Wow! Yes! Of course I can have that!” Which, of course, is true!

Think of the word: emotion:
E = outwards
motion = movement of energy

It’s just energy.

Take the judgement off, and look at it as sheer, undiluted energy that you could harness and use for your own.

Now you can take that energy and use it to create,
or continue living, your Dream!

It’s easy to see how utilizing the energy that was previously blocking you can give you an enormous boost. I hope you’ll use that boost each time you feel something that you don’t like.

REMEMBER:

Not liking how you feel is a good indication that there is stuck energy in your system. That you can clear it, harvest it and use it creatively!

Isn’t it amazing that all this time you have avoided feeling bad without understanding that those very feelings were trying to let you know that there was a jam to be cleared up?

Now you know what to do:
Notice you’re feeling “bad” – having one of those “negative” emotions.
Tap on your collarbone.
Check out where the feeling is in your body (or outside of it).
Get a good idea of where it is, what it looks, sounds and feels like.
Ask it why it’s there.
Make a new deal with it.
Decide what you want to do with all that new energy!

Now get back to your poster board, it’s waiting!

aloha,
Angela Treat Lyon

Angela Treat Lyon Interview: Transitions Radio in Santa Fe, NM!

ATL-LEVI

I had the wonderful honor of being interviewed by Levi Ben Shmuel, who writes a great blog post for the Huffington Post, on the Sunday radio show in Santa Fe, NM that he hosts with 2 others.

I invite you to listen in on this shorty (5 minute) interview, where I describe graphically how big the problem of the Great Garbage Patch is: transradio.com.

They question me about my Paint 100 Paintings in 100 Days project to raise awareness of the problems around our consumption and discarding of plastic water bottles, and about the Great Garbage Patches in the oceans (there are five) – in the post called The New Good Life – John Robbins, Maitreya & A Floating Garbage Patch (show 1386) Sep 19th, 2010 Posted in Ecology & The Environment – Look for Hour #1. I was on the air from about minute 46 – 53.

And…as an extra bonus

I’m including Levi’s latest blog post – The Festival of Sukkot: 7 Nights, 7 Guests, 7 Inspirational Ways of Seeing.

I enjoyed it because he described a Jewish festival about which I had not one clue before. I was fascinated to discover about each of the 7 Guests, their essences, how they offer different gifts, and how to use these in your own daily life.

Patricia Bengston, Stone Sculptor: Living Her Deepest Dreams

bengston-face
One of California’s foremost stone sculptors, Patricia Bengston-Jones is a shining example of a Daring Dreamer – someone who doesn’t take Normal for one minute and who bucks the odds to live her Deepest Dreams. Not because of any rebellion, necessarily, but because it’s simply who she is and what she does.

She’s a powerful example of someone who really lives her passion, not alowing the numbing, everyday trance that surrounds us that says, “get a job, be norrrrmaallll…” overtake her!

Raw, mythical power

I was really taken with her work. I love the raw, mythical quality of it, and how she allows the stone to be stone, rather than trying to make something pretty-pretty out of it. It’s stone: heavy; plain; figured; textural; translucent; eternal; even humorous.

bengston-jones-sail

I love how her forms give you an inkling of a story, but not much more than will tickle your own frames of reference and put you on the beginning of a path to create your own stories from the images.

Time and Form

lets-clean-the-barnaclesIDYRHere is one of the pieces I loved the most. Although these are all maritime themed, not all of her works are.  Let’s Clean the Barnacles Off: made from Travertine and Slate, 10″ x 7″ x 20″

Here’s what she has to say on her site: PBengtson.com

“As a seeker of knowledge, with ten years of landscape and (color) field painting in 1972, I returned to finished my education, to find answers in my search of the ‘unknown’.

“This led me into sculpture and using concepts of the prehistoric monumental stone sites and myths. I visited England, Italy and Mexico, and lived in the Southwest.

I used the monolithic forms, arches and stacking or layering to denote the passage of time in my sculpture

bengston-jones-marble“This background information along with the mythology of the Vikings, has helped me research my own heritage which combines Swedish and Northern European.

“My endless search has helped to shed some light on the unexplained phenomena of my past cultures. It enables my sculpture to come together as a ‘Passage to My Heritage.’ ”

Make sure you visit her site for more mythical, powerful stone and glass work – especially check out that gateway she’s carving in the image above! See lots more of her works at her website, PBengtson.com.

How My Ma Lived Artfully and Why I Never Paint Gory Stuff

ma

When I was a child, I admired the fact that my mother was a professional artist.

She painted stark watercolor land and seascapes, inspired by the windswept beaches, watering holes and harbors up and down the New England coast that she and my dad sailed through.

She was often commissioned to do pastel portraits of our friends, neighbors and their kids. I remember going with her to the portrait sittings and playing with the siblings of the kids who were sitting. We were all bored, and made fun by creating our own portraits. That’s where it all began for me.

ma-painting

This is one of her watercolors of Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island, where we lived.

I wasn’t such a huge fan of her portraits, but I loved how she could get across the idea of the glassy water of Bar Harbor, Maine using one swipe of her brush, or the freedom of a gull in the air with only a squiggle made perfectly, freely just-so. Because of her, I started drawing at age six, and never stopped.

Gory stuff

I used to pore through her art history books, study her sketches, snitch any old art materials it looked like she’d abandoned, and practice on her scraps of paper.

goyaOne of the things I remember clearly about her books were the gory, hideous war paintings from before World War I.

I didn’t realize that at the time that they were painted, drawings and paintings were the only way that anyone could communicate what was happening to people in one part of the world to the people in another.

Instantaneous communication is so now ubiquitous – even back then in the 50s with our dial phones, radio and the beginnings of TV – that I thought it was just sheer perversity that anyone would want to paint such subjects.

I misunderstood the function of art before radio and TV. I didn’t get that Goya’s paintings and Daumier’s drawings were like newspapers today, conveying what was going on at the time.

If you look back at their amazing work: Francisco Goya (see here) and Honore Daumier (see here), could have unquestionably been Pulitzer prize reporters for their eras. Nonetheless, I was dismayed by their subject matter – most of which was far milder than what is “normal” to see in the media today.

Not for me

I decided that I’d never paint or carve anything so gruesome. I wanted to see color, light, delight, soul, depth, honesty, courage, beauty, inspiration, power, connection to the divine. I decided, too, that I had to go beyond just making art – I wanted to live my life artfully, as well – although I really didn’t know quite how to do that yet.

Over the years since those days, I have made a practice of just that: trying to live my life as artfully as I can. I’ve found that attempting to make each thing I do perfect leads to stagnation, boredom and huge anxiety (will it be good enough; can I do it?). Instead, I just slow myself down a fraction to be able to breathe in and out, look at what I’m doing or the person I’m with, then appreciate them as much as I can. When I do that, life seems to light up somehow.

Speeding through life

I’ve noticed that people who have a hard time don’t quite reach the levels of success they’d like, or the relationships or money they want. They are also the ones who forget to add beauty to their lives.

I have also noticed that these same people also have a tendency to speed through their lives as if they are being chased by some huge expectation … that they simultaneously believe they will never attain!

Speeding through life produces an inability to appreciate your surroundings, your relationships, yourself or what you do accomplish.

Without appreciation, how can you thrive?

You can’t – at least not as fully as you would, otherwise.

Think of the word “appreciation.”

The root word from which it is derived means “precious.”

To appreciate is to make precious, dear to your heart. Imagine if you stopped long enough during your day to appreciate your feet, and how they carry you all over the place. Even though you give them so little attention, there they are doing your work.

  • What could you do for your feet today that would make them (and you!) feel delicious?
  • What could you do for your friend today that would help him or her feel great?
  • What can you do as best you can that would make you feel like you accomplished something today?

That’s living artfully.

Think of your kitchen. It’s where all the food in your life comes in, gets stored, cleaned, and prepared for your life fuel. How much do you appreciate your kitchen? What would it take to stand in the middle of that kitchen and look around, radiating appreciation to the counter tops, the sink, the fridge, the floor? Not much!

Try it and see how that feels.

Then do it with other places in your house. You’ll notice that there will be places you’ll want to clean up a bit, maybe move some furniture around, open windows. Don’t be so anxious to do it right away, though.

Give the room your love first, and ask yourself, if I were to really love myself, and live artfully, appreciating and doing everything the best I could, how would I like this room to be?

Make mental notes as you go through your day as to what you could slow down, take a breath in and out, and appreciate. Then do it. Doesn’t have to take long at all!

Make mental notes about what you’d like to change in your house, your behavior, your relationships, your business. Make changes gradually, and celebrate them and how those changes make you feel.

Note and appreciate the people, things, and places that you want to honor for having stood by you for a long time. Even take a second to write a line of appreciation on a card and send it off to one of those people.

THAT is living artfully: create your life on purpose, in beauty and appreciation.

I know you can do it, and that the more you do, the better you’ll feel. And the better you feel, the better your life will be, day by day by day.

Do You Have Great, Unshakable Support for Your Life?

ocean-of-love

One of the most precious things that can help make your life as great as you wish it to be is an unshakable support system.

Whether that consists of your family, friends, co-workers, business team or a great coach, that support is essential.

These are the people (or person) to whom you can go and feel safe, and by whom you feel loved and uplifted.

With them, you can open your heart, let your hurts fall out on the floor for examination and healing, without any judgement or criticisms or you-should-haves.

They stand by you

They love and support you with massive amounts of love as you be with that pile of scary stuff, deal with it, and decide what to do next.

They stand by you as you go through and transform your circumstances, attitudes, thoughts, or situations so you end up feeling good, so you feel open and delighted again.

hugYou know for certain that they have the uplifting energy and sweet, unbiased love and support that only someone who believes in you can give you.

You know for sure that, even if they don’t have any solutions for your problem, any new perspective through which to look, they still love you without judgement. And that they will be with you until and as you choose something new, something that does work for you.

You also know that, even if you don’t don’t like what they have to say, they will tell you the truth of their own experience; they will give you their opinion and perspective; and they will tell you how they feel.

And you know that they will never insist that you do anything their way–that yes, they’ll have their say, but they know that you need to make your own decisions that may even be in direct opposition to what they say or would do, themselves.

To have a person in your life
who will be this for you is mighty precious.

It’s a gift beyond measure. It’s like having a rock to lie down on in the sun and breathe in new light and life. It’s strength where there seemed, before, to be none. It’s a line to life when life itself seems impossible. It’s a mirror for the depth of your own power, the power that takes you where ever you want to go.

These are the kind of people who ask you what you’d like to get out of this situation, rather than joining you in blame, shame, resentment or pity parties. You’ve found a gem. What a gift!

Do you have a person like that?

If not, I invite you to become one, yourself, to at least one person.

You’ll find out what it’s like, to be that generous, that kind, that truthful. It will grow you faster than you can even begin to imagine. And one day you’ll see that you’ve had people like this in your life the whole time–you just never knew it. You just never recognized them.

If you do you have people in your life who love you and support you, who make you feel safe and like you can do anything you set your mind to, then send them love and gratitude, because they need it, too!

I send you an ocean of love.

Rupa Marya: Respected Doctor, Accomplished Musician

rupa

Rupa Marya: Respected Doctor, accomplished Musician, is such an inspiration to those of us who are not strictly right or left brain oriented. She’s the perfect embodiment of the idea that left informs right, right enhances left. She juggles two seemingly disparate careers – and thrives doing it!

In short, she decided to go for her doctorate, but couldn’t stay away from music. She decided to do both–and kept each side secret from the other! As I searched for other viable news reports about her, I found these two articles below. I hope you enjoy reading about her!

From ABC news: (Read the whole thing HERE)
“Rupa Marya grew up seriously thinking she would become a doctor. She also wanted to be a singer, it was what her parents – immigrants from India wanted for her as well. Her heart was also in music so she felt pressure to choose between medicine or music.”

From Boston: (Read the whole thing HERE)
She says, “”Watching this country become more fearful and journalists becoming the mouthpiece of the administration, I became so angry,” says Marya, on the phone from Sweden. She performs with the April Fishes Tuesday at Johnny D’s as part of a North American tour that includes the Montreal Jazz Festival and Quebec City’s Festival d’Été.

“I couldn’t pick up my guitar,” Marya says. “It was too painful. But then I started to think about what would it be like to create music that reflected what I wanted to see in the world, to give a voice to the things that weren’t getting any airtime. I started with an assignment to write 10 songs about love, compassion, and uncertainty in a time of love across borders.

“How we convey information to one another is something that’s very interesting to me,” Marya says. “As a doctor, there are so many ways you can miscommunicate, and it’s always a challenge. How do you tell somebody they’re dying? How do you tell an audience that people in their neighborhood are living with so much fear of being deported that they don’t seek proper medical help? It’s like the riddle of my life, and I explore it several different ways, through music, and through these kinds of investigations.”

Sudden and Extreme Out of the Blue Breakfast Ecstacy

all-one

I recently had an experience of extreme ecstasy – eating breakfast!

I have a small semi-enclosed area by my house which I use as a studio. When the weather is nice, that’s where I like to eat, sitting in my big comfy chair.

For some reason, I got a wild hair last week and bought Raisin Bran and milk. I virtually never eat cereal or milk, so who knows where that urge came from!

As I was sitting there munching…

I was thinking about how fortunate I felt about having come through a certain hospital bout so easily, and for having really created a foundation for feeling happy despite what went on around me.

I thought of that phrase, “we’re all One.”

Well, I thought, if we really are all One, then there is no separation from me and anything or anyone else.

I put the spoon in my mouth, and suddenly the universe slowed down to a crawl, and I experienced a kind of a flattening – how to describe this – it was as if nothing stood out as any more or less important than anything else, and everything was divinely given, divinely provided.

A Gift

The spoon and cereal became a Gift of the Universe itself, and as I slid it over my tongue, my “regular” perception of my-hand-holding-spoon-feeding-my-face became Universe-feeding-my-soul.

It was as if my hand disappeared, and the food floated there all by itself, ready for me to nurture myself with, almost as a babe does at the breast.

Somehow I was able to extend the experience for about five bite-chew-swallows. It shook me to my roots. My body was trembling and tears were streaming down my face, and my heart felt like it would burst, and for once my chatty mind was completely still.

I felt so happy I was sure I’d explode!

It’s such a strange thing that I had the urge to buy and eat food that, in the past, gave me belly aches, and that I haven’t eaten in at least 30 years. Spirit works in strange ways!

Here’s to bliss for you, too!

Quit Being So ‘Nice’ and Say It Like It Is. Kindly.

wolf-at-door

I ran into an old friend today at the store. He looked like he was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. He told me a few things that were going on with him.

In the past, I’d have taken time to listen to his whole story, yessing and um-hmmm-ing and being ‘nice’ and making light suggestions if he wanted them.

I don’t feel ‘nice’ anymore.

My emergency surgery last month had a very deep and profound effect on me – I got to see how real it was that I could have left the planet in a wink.

And in view of that, I felt really ticked off that my friend today was being so nonchalant about  something he was doing that would have really bad consequences in the future if he didn’t shift out of it – and told him so, no bones.

I’m going to repeat it to you, because I feel so passionate about it. Here’s what I said, because I just love this guy, and I couldn’t bear to see where he was going: :

“You know, this isn’t a dress rehearsal.

This is IT. You don’t get a second chance at any of the seconds you waste. Not one. This is the best it gets, right here, right now, unless you make the next ones better.

Each minute, you get the opportunity to choose clarity or chaos. Which are you going to choose?

Because if you don’t choose, and you try to get to my age in the mess you’re in right now, you may not GET to my age.

It really doesn’t matter what your story is – if you continue to not make conscious choices and to allow your default mindset to run you, you have not one iota of justification to complain or blame anyone but yourself.

What are you committed to? What do you want to be remembered for? What makes you feel good? What makes your heart race? What makes you feel expanded and on fire? What makes you feel clean and connected inside?

If you’re not making the choices to create those feelings and live them, then you’re actively choosing the life of a robot. Is that what you want?”

To say that he was stunned would be a bit of an understatement. But he got it, and appreciated it. I could see that he was making new choices right then and there. His body even looked lighter.

In the past I’d never have been so outspoken.

I’d have been afraid he’d take offense, or that I’d feel stupid. But I have to tell you that my commitment to the truth of my Being has gotten so much bigger.

It’s the Mindset

You know as well as I do that if the mindset isn’t there, there’s only floundering, freaking out and failure. It’s like thinking you’re going to rocket to the moon when all you have is a rubber ducky.

It’s beyond turning fear around – fear is only a small part of that whole creation.

It’s really being able to take any situation and glean the best from it and make it into something you’re excited and delighted about forever, aligned choices that all fit together into the beautiful whole of your life.

People talk about mindset, they show other peoples’ mindset examples, but where do you find out exactly how to create your mindset in a way that works for you?

Believe me, it isn’t about affirmations, afformations, goals, maps, plans, or anything material. It’s way deeper than that, and yet so simple. It’s a daily path, a vigil, a challenge, an artistic creation. Are you up to it?

In our day and age when so much is not only possible but plausible, when we are being asked by the universe to stand forth and be true to our dreams and passions, it’s just a darn crime to sink back into “I can’t.” I won’t allow it in my life, and I’m praying you don’t, either.

Are YOU ready to be Real?

Are you ready to acknowledge what’s going on with you, feel it, and be willing to construct something a whole lot better?

Then take those fear feelings and limitations and remove the dirty charge from them and clean them up. Then you can expand the energy and use it in the light and love and creativity you deserve and that is your right in this life.

I’m tired of ‘nice.’

Nice doesn’t get the results I want. I’m not talking about not being kind, I’m talking about saying what is real so you can move on to the next step.

How real can you get?

How much energy are you throwing away being ‘nice,’ but not real?

How much do you want to continue pseudo-dreaming, someday-gonna-do this or that?

Man, aren’t you just sick of that? Step on out!

I invite you to pull out the stops so you can accelerate the progress YOU want to make – no matter at what pace – in no uncertain terms. I want you to have the feeling that no matter what happens in your life, you’ll have what it takes to deal with it and bend it to your dreams.

Create Your Financial Reality by Changing Your Thoughts

money-reality

Today’s economy is freaking people out, no bones about it. Here are a few of items you may find interesting. I decided to look up the definition of the word, ‘economy’.

Before I list the ones I thought were most clear, I suggest that you stop a second and see what the word ‘economy’ brings up for you.

What do ‘money’ or ‘economy’ mean?

When I put that question to myself, I thought immediately about how we operate on a fiat currency system, rather than one backed by gold or some physical substance of perceived value.

I also thought about how a fiat economy, by definition, always historically collapses within a specific period of time; and how over the last 90 years this system was introduced and implemented by people who were so saturated with greed that their own self-aggrandizement came before the lives of everyone else.

I also thought about how so many important public programs and institutions are being cut back and even eliminated. None of what is going on today makes sense to me if we are to carry on creating fulfilling lives.

Now, here are some of the definitions I found:
Economy:
1. The system by which money, industry and trade are organized
2. The system of production, distribution and consumption
3. Efficient use of resources
4. Effective management
5. A system of allocating resources based only on the interaction of market forces, supply and demand
6. A true market economy is free of governmental influence, collusion and other external influences.

My question is this

If we cannot do anything immediately effective to change the way our commerce and currency are set up, what CAN we do?

What to do?

There are several things we can each do to create a new relationship with the world and the economy, no matter what is going on outside of ourselves.

star-yellow 1. Realize that every thought, feeling, belief and action you generate and act upon determines your reality. Take deeper responsibility.

Use energy practices to even out old self-worth issues that keep you shy, angry, sad, depressed, etc.

You may think you, your energy and your life are inconsequential in the Big Scheme of Things, but that is utterly untrue.

Your energy is needed right now right here in order to help dream up, create and nurture a new, clean paradigm.

Energies are shifting so fast and so intensely that it’s easy to get caught up in the density – don’t allow it. If you have to use EFT (the Emotional Freedom Techniques) all day long, do so. This is not a dress rehearsal.

star-yellow2. Remember that we participate in this economy, even if we don’t like it.

So every one of us needs to be conscious of how we literally vote with our dollars. And I know you know what I mean by that. Use each dollar as if it was a ballot cast in the voting box. It will make a huge difference in how you use your funds, and will produce results that will surprise and please you.

star-yellow3. Stop complaining and ask what you can do differently in your own life, whether tiny or huge, to create the shifts in your life that would make it better. Then make a pact with yourself to DO those little shifts. DO those big things. Do it, and see how cool it is to feel like, “Hey! I made a difference in my own life!”

star-yellow4. Get rid of excesses and distractions. Really ask yourself at a deep level what it is you value and if you really want to keep spending time and energy on things that only have half or minimal value to you. Just stop doing them. They waste your life energy. Concentrate on what helps you bring yourself internal pleasure and even a soul-thrill.

star-yellow5. Tap. If you have no clue what I’m talking about, get FREEbie info at EFTinEveryHome.com.

Tap all day, as I said. Don’t let your emotions or thoughts be either totally numb or overpowering you. Tap on feelings of anger, fear, sadness, grief, shame, impatience, helplessness and powerlessness.

Tap on thoughts of blame, shame, complain, vengeance, retaliation, disappointment, terr-or, disgust, dismay, self-sabotage, not-good-enough, etc.

Keep tapping until you can come to a place of inner peace, even if it’s a tiny bit at a time. How can we say we want peace if we can’t even create it in our own minds and bodies first? The journey starts within – always.

star-yellow6. Remember that you are part of life’s Great Circle, and that you are no less than and no more than any other creature in the universe. You are valued and honored, and your contributions, life energy and individual spark are part of that which keeps us all on fire and alive.

Head into the Wind and Hold onto the Helm Despite the Fear

sailing

Have you felt the energy lately?

Doesn’t it feel crazy?

Pay attention here, because this can be one of the most powerful times of your life.

The lull

As a kid sailing out on Long Island Sound and on the Atlantic, I learned about the lull.

Each time I encountered storms I noticed a funny thing. That almost always before a storm – even a small squall – there was a split-second lull before the energies shifted and the storm came and broke on top of us.

Where we had been cutting clean through the water, all sails smooth and everything functioning well, there was an almost indistinguishable moment when everything seemed to just *** pause.

Just for a moment

You could see the waves flatten out momentarily, feel the wind get shifty and the eyes of your crew as they look at you for direction. The air gets a yellowish tinge, and a fine, smooth greyish line of light on the horizon starts to approach you on the water as the darkening skies lower themselves atop your boat.

As skipper, your attention has to include your crew and what each one is doing, your boat and how it feels under your seat, the helm and how it’s acting in your hands, the wind and what it’s doing on the water and in your sails, the water and what’s under its depths, where you are n relation to everything around you, and, of course, the weather in general.

Life-changing choices

You suddenly feel very small on a very vast ocean. And you know instinctively that the choices you make in this split-second lull are paramount to your survival.

If you’re close enough to one, you might make it to a sheltering cove where you can drop sails and a wind-anchor, and point your boat upwind to keep it steady as the storm rages around you.

But if you can’t, you need to move fast.

Switch on your GPS beacon.

Reef or drop all sails immediately, secure anything movable to the decks, make sure all crew has life jackets on and are tethered to the boat – including yourself – and again, head into the wind.

Listen to what I just said:

You stop, pay attention, make a choice.

When you’ve chosen, you take action: you stop all generated movement, take precautionary measures to protect your self and crew and possessions, and face the wind.

Why face the wind?

Because it means you’re offering the least resistance to the storm. The bow, or front, of your boat is pointed, and cuts through the water and helps you climb over the waves, even if they are three times higher than your mast.

Because if those waves hit you side on, you’re toast – they’ll flip you over so fast you won’t know left from right. And they’ll keep pounding you.

Because if you face the wind, you can ride it,
rather than being ridden.

It takes strength to ride a storm. The wind will try to rip you around and propel you where you don’t want to go. The force of the water will try to take the helm from your hands, and the gusts, rain and swells will try to sweep you overboard, fill your bilges and try to swamp you.

But if you’ve been smart enough to be prepared, if you keep your mind clear and calm, your crew ready and efficient and your hands firmly on the helm, even if the storm lasts for a day or three, you’ll make it. You’ll make it.

Your mast and other parts of your boat might get broken or washed overboard, you may be mighty hungry from not being able to take time to eat, you may be exhausted, cold and soaked through to the bone, but you’ll make it.

Right now

Right now, in our specific time, I can feel the air like the frisson of electricity in the air before a hurricane.

Right now is the time when you need to make your choice: run for a safe cove or haul all your sails down, make sure your crew is safe, lash everything securely, head to the wind and keep your helm with courage, strength and clarity.

Most of us don’t have a safe cove, whether financial or otherwise. Without making a clear, conscious choice right now to create safety and even a new reality for themselves, people are sitting ducks for a reality of crisis and disaster. Since ‘news’ about that is consistently regurgitated on the news day in and day out, it’s easy to buy into.

Don’t be like them.

Make the choice to ride the storm with calm and grace.

Pull as many sails down as you can – cut your excesses and clear out any distractions. Maintain your headway – be clear on your purpose, intentions and destination.

Keep your crew safe. Make sure your family, friends and loved ones are safely ensconced within your heart, and tell them how important they are to you. Do everything you can to support their lives and potential.

I’m not saying be a sappy-corny mush-mush! Just look them in the eye and smile, or squeeze their hands, or say quietly that they’re the most important thing in the world to you. Be real, and say it as often as you can from your heart – even if it’s in actions rather than words.

If you’ve had a crisis where people have helped you out,
you know how important being loved is.

Dish it out the same way you’d like to receive it.

Make sure your life-jacket is on

Make sure your inner GPS is connected – that inner light within you that knows exactly what to do how and when. And LISTEN to it.

Always, always hang onto your helm.
Never, ever let go.

You’re the caption of your destiny. Even if you have only a sliver of an idea where you’re going, your inner GPS and your determination to hold onto the helm – your integrity, your knowingness about who you are and your values – will get you through any storm.

If you panic now, during this lull, well, I wish you the best. If you keep thinking fearfully about the disaster, disaster is what you get.

If you understand that even things that look ‘bad’ can turn out to be miracles and blessings, miracles and blessings are what you get.

If you can keep from panicking and hold onto what is dear to you and keep imagining that something amazing is about to happen, it will.

In the accelerated energies of now, things shift in the blink of an eye – can you keep up with it? Can you let go of the flotsam and jetsam of old beliefs and judgments enough to see the gleam of the sun as it begins to shine through, even as the storm rages?

Head into the wind!

Face your daily circumstances with courage and the conviction that you can and will not only make it through this storm, but end up in an incredible harbor you never realized existed.

What’s that new harbor like? If you could have any wish, and could create that harbor, what would it be full of? Fill it now in your mind so you can head to the wind and end up there.

Take advantage of the lulls. Don’t be fooled into thinking everything will return to what we used to call normal. It won’t. We’re in a time of massive shift, and it’s our opportunity to face it and create, even under what seem to be the most dire circumstances.

Stop trying to Get

Get more status, wealth, money, success – whatever it is you constantly strive for. None of that is important now. Take a breath and let material things be material things, not the focus of your attention.

Give it up. Literally – raise your hands above your head and shout, I give it Up! I give it all to That, the I Am! And trust that the Great I Am has had you in its hands all along.

What IS important is to expand your inner knowing, your inner light, to live it and share it. Strive to Be – the clearest, hummingest, brightest light you can be. That’s it. Simple, but by no means always easy.

You’re a part of the Great Circle, and we all need you and your clear energy, just as you need us and our clear energy.

It’s Time. Right NOW.

The Black Madonna, Carved by Hand from Black Soapstone

BLACK-MADONNA

This is the Black Madonna (and her child) after about 15 carving sessions.

The stone you see with my glasses on top is what this piece looked like at the start. You can see my hammer next to it.

I carve all by hand, using small chisel and files called rifflers. I carve at about 2 or 3 hours at a time, although sometimes I’ll put in a full day. Hard to do as it’s pretty tiring work. Imagine swinging a 2-pound hammer all day – you get tired!

It probably will take me a good 45 to 60 hours total to finish this using just hand tools. If I were using air tools, it’d go monstrously faster, but I like the pace of hand tools.

I raised the hand on our right up so you can now see the child’s belly and the top of her thighs. It looked way too ponderous the way it was before. You actually have more latitude for moving elements around than you’d think, and I push the envelope as far as I can!

I wanted her to look like a mother, not a girl-friend, so I made the chins swing away from each other – this way they are pressing foreheads together, and that’s it. I also took away a lot of that heavy hair on the side.

Now it seems to me to be a double entendre: is it a child imagining being held by her mother? Or is it a mother holding her child? Or maybe it’s a child imagining herself as an adult, or dreaming an angel. I like to think of it as a mother transmitting her innate wisdom to her child. Now you make up your story about it!

Are You Living Your Heart’s Deepest Dreams NOW? No? Why Not?

pots

Way back in November of 1981, after almost 20 years of having been a fine art potter, I decided to take the next step. It was time to make the move from making pots – upon which I drew very detailed designs in black and white – to carving 3-d figures in stone.

I had just been introduced to carving-stone by an old friend, and I was hot to trot. I couldn’t stop thinking or dreaming about it, and I even now had stone in my studio just sitting there begging to be carved.

From everywhere and everyone I heard, “Oh, Angela! You shouldn’t stop making your beautiful pots!” But I just knew it was Right for me.

Although I had been supporting myself and my 2 kids on my pots, and it was really scary to think of selling off my clay, glazes, kilns and all the stuff having to do with creating my pots, on December 25th, I told my kids that I had decided I’d stick with making pots for one more year so I could have a smooth transition into carving stone.

Oops – nevermind that plan!

And at 11:43 am on December 31st, I was slammed not once, but twice in a car wreck that completely totalled my car and left my neck and back so damaged that I was told I’d probably never walk again.

Lying in bed, drowsy from pain pills, I heard…

Lyon-sc-hula-kahiko-gourd-700-sigOne was saying that it was such a shame I’d never walk again, and if I’d never decided to quit making pots I’d still be OK, shame on me, why couldn’t I ever take anyone’s advice.

Another very firmly told the first one to stuff itself in its own dark place, and that it was because I had something to Do that I had to continue carving–even if I had to do it sitting down.

And yet another that told both of them just to be still, please, because the universe is a mutable essence, and if we could all work together, we could heal my body and not only get me walking again but carving and carrying big rocks around as if I was a 20-year old again.

I loved that last voice!

It made me feel so supported and so powerful. From the inside out. And although I was flat on my back and in too much pain to move, I felt as if I had a rocket inside of me that simply had to take off, that wouldn’t allow me to sit and stew or feel sorry for myself or stop seeking assistance in getting back on my feet.

I went to 3 ‘experts’

All of them wore long, grave faces, closed their office doors sooo carefully and quietly, sat down and gazed at me solemnly across their desks. They each spoke in hushed tones, as if I was already one foot under.

By the third one, I was livid. Boiling. I refused to put up with their cemented belief that I’d be crippled for the rest of my life.

I fired all three, went home feeling curiously light, happy, and utterly trusting that someone would show up for me.

Ahhh…Real help!

The very next day, I was introduced quite by chance (right!) to a chiropractor who lived a half a block away! Within 6 weeks he had me walking again, and most of the aches and pains and stiffnesses and knots in my neck and back gone.

Needless to say, I decided to uphold my original choice to move on from pots. The Universe had spoken, and I listened. I’ve been carving stone ever since, going into painting and illustrating on the side.

Walk your dreams

And I’m going to continue to talk my walk, and continue updating you on the techniques, systems and tactics I take and that I hear about and think are great that will help you walk your dreams.

Why is it so important that we do so now, of all times?

Because if we get caught in oh-the-economy-is-bad-woe-is-me-what-am-I-gonna-do BS, we’ll stay there.

Focus

You know as well as I do that we get that upon which we focus. Focus with me and all the other aligned people who are knowingly, trustingly, joyously creating life the way we want to live: conscious, conscious, conscious!

It’s Time–NOW. We have enough information about how to create what we want, we have enough resources and connections to build the world we want, and we have the guts, the minds and the heart. I refuse to even imagine our not doing it.

Look at interruptions and pain and illness and obstacles as messages, not blocks.

Look at them and ask, “where is the energy in this that I could use to create something better–for myself, my loved ones and my world?”

Then ask…

What is the first thing I can do, what is the first step I can take towards something I’d rather have or be or do?

What can I say in my mind that will keep me from the perpetual downward spiral of why-me and oh-I’m-stuck by asking yourself what would I rather see/feel/do/have?

What is my next step on my continued path, holding the space for the Dream?

Why ask these Qs?

Because it’s right here, right now, and all we need to do is let it expand within our hearts and minds and lives.

INSPIRATION

Here are SOME of the most radical, most heart-swelling videos I’ve ever seen.

Here is how one jaded young man woke up and changed his mind and has now helped thousands of people all over the world get clean water.

Not only that, but he has developed an amazing charity structure that allows ALL–yes, 100%–of the monies donated be used for the intended people and purposes.

Sweet Music, Sweet Days in Old-Timey Aloha-Filled Hawaii

kaneohe-bey

I’m remembering how it used to be here in Hawaii before it got so populated. I came to Maui in 1966, and later lived for years on the island of Kauai in the tiny town of Kekaha, which was built up around a sugar plantation.

At times the cane fields would be burnt in preparation for harvesting. The flames would rise up higher than our rooftops, and the smoke and the sweet smell of molasses permeated everything.

(Image is of my painting is Kaneohe Bay, original oil)

HAOLES

My kids and I were the only haoles (white people) in a mostly Filipino settlement. They thought I was weird because, as an artist working for myself, I didn’t work for the plantation – and I thought they were weird for making blood pudding, eating dried, smelly sardines and killing pigs under my window once a month. But after a while the hard edges of our judgements wore off and I was honored that we eventually became an accepted part of that group of really wonderful people.

TALK STORY

We used to gather spontaneously on someone’s back steps near the beach in the afternoon, break out the guitars, ukuleles, beer and sodas and our kids would run around as we talked story and sang Hawaiian songs and gobbled tons of local food.

SWEET, PUNNY MUSIC

Today I found a site with music like we used to sing, and wanted to share it with you because the music gives such a taste of what it felt like then–slow, uncomplicated, sweet, and sometimes very funny.

The Hawaiian language is full of puns–with four, five, even six levels of meaning with every well-thought phrase–so a song about a man’s prowess surfing could be taken many ways! The impromptu hulas we did when we sang them were always a source of hilarity. If you go here you will see a list of sample songs.

The music is acoustic slack-key guitar. The guitar first came to Hawaii in the 19th century with the Mexican cowboys (paniolos), but when they left, no one could figure out how to tune them. They ‘slacked’ the strings, until a single chord was formed in what they call ‘open’ tuning. A whole tradition has grown up around that sound, and these songs are little bitty samples of the feeling of the islands.

I especially love the song Ku`ulei `Awapuhi (Ku’ulei means beloved, awapuhi is the local yellow ginger that grows abundantly in the forests.) because it really sounds like what we used to play those afternoons. You may not like it, but to me it always brings me to my heart and makes me weep. It wasn’t always that way–there are many songs here where the guys sing in falsetto, and when I first heard them I could hardly believe my ears. But now the music is so ingrained in me I hear it and the ocean sweeps through me, the moonlit nights, bird calls and forest sounds fill me and I feel full and content.

The song Pu`uanahulu is a good example of some sweet slack key guitar playing. Pua Sadinia makes me cry every time I hear it, although I know perfectly well it’s a rendition of a haole song….Ka Uluwehi O Ke Kai sounds exactly like the un-mainland-influenced songs in the early 60s.

If you want to hear some really incredible Hawaiian sounds, get any album by Iz, Israel Kamakawiwo`ole (kah MAka veevoh OH-ley), a humble, sweet, talented singer whose heart gave out after a long battle with obesity, whose rendition of ‘Over the Rainbow’ has been played and celebrated world-wide. Here’s my favorite album of his, Alone in the World.

There are other albums there on that site with plenty of examples of the real Hawaiian music. Nowadays it’s permeated with rap and rock, and the older songs with sharp cutting chants and the wavering older people’s voices is fading out. But that’s what happens–music changes to reflect time times and the people living in them.

Look for music from some of the best: Keola and Kapono Beamer, Olomana, Palani Vaughn, Gabby, Cyril and Sonny  Pahinui, Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo`ole, Sonny Chillingsworth, Peter Moon, Ozzie Kotani, Ledward Kaapana….

Sorry – Bill Gates Ain’t Gonna Pay You! – Avoid Being A Scammer

gates

You know those emails (and now facebook posts!) that say if you send on the email you’ll get paid thousands of dollars by Bill Gates? Sorry ’bout that. Scam.

Four things to do

Here are four ways you can keep your friends, family and acquaintances un-spammed and happy with you.

1. Don’t yell

Did you know that WHEN YOU TYPE IN ALL CAPITALS it’s considered yelling? Don’t do that. It’s hard to read, and people will yell at you for doing it.

Refrain from panicked email subject lines like PLEEEEASE READ. Most emails with subject lines like that are blatantly spam.

If you want your email opened and given proper respect, use both Upper and Lower case letters.

2. How to send out mass emails without everyone yelling at you

If you send out notes to a group from your regular email carrier and not from your auto-responder, never, ever, ever, EVER use Cc (carbon copy).

ALWAYS use Bcc (blind carbon copy). If your email carrier doesn’t have Bcc, then don’t send out mass notes from it. Period. Find another way. Sign up for an autoresponder system like 1AutomationWiz.com or a mass emailing system like constantcontact.com of one kind or other.

Why? Because down the line, that note that you Cc’d people, which thenceforth went to more people and then more people–every single one of them with every single email address sitting there like lame ducks waiting to get shot, whose recipients passed it on–one day, a spammer is going to see all those lovely lines of email addresses and use them for his spamming (or hers). It’s called email address spam harvesting.

When you use Cc, you have turned into an indirect spammer. Don’t do it. Use Bcc. Got that? Third….

3. Don’t use scammy subject lines

When you get notes with subject lines like PLEEEEASE READ, and they tell you something like Bill Gates can track every email you send and will pay you ten cents or something ridiculous don’t believe it! He can’t track your emails! Good grief! He wouldn’t want to! NO, sorry, he won’t send you any money! And if he could track your emails, isn’t that just a little bit spooky??? Grow up!

4. Check to see if it’s real

Check with snopes.com every time you get a note like that, and you will find that they are NOT for real.

Save yourself the embarrassment of having to write your list and tell them it wasn’t a real email and that you are embarrassed and won’t ever, ever do it again. Don’t send them out in the first place.

What to do when you get an email with PLEEEEASE READ in the subject line?

Hit delete. BEFORE you read it.

No, it really won’t be anything you might miss.

No, it won’t be anything important your far-away cousin sent you.

No, it has not one good thing about it at all–unless you’re a spammer, in which case it will have hundreds of email addresses innocent ignorant people have allowed to circulate endlessly.

Please, do the rest of us a big favor, and be a savvy emailer, OK? Delete those things as fast as you get them, and help keep those addresses out of harm.

Check with snopes.com, OK? Thanks.

Don’t Stop Because Someone Says, “That isn’t the way it’s done!”

In the 60s, I lived in New York City. Somehow, although I was surrounded with artists, musicians, poets and writers on a daily basis at the art school I attended, my parents expected me to keep myself suspended from that reality and “keep pure of mind”. I had no clue whatever that meant!

Suffice it to say that if they actually thought about it and realized that I was hanging out with these people, my very straight folks would have had apoplexy and keeled over on the spot.

The attic

One Sunday afternoon when I was visiting my folks, I had a wild urge to sneak up into the attic. We were expressly forbidden the attic because it was “unsafe.”

Unsafe, meaning that, over the broad expanse of most of the attic there was no floor, with only a small section at the far end covered with enough plywood to allow a small stack of old boxes to not fall through to the floors below. Of course, it was assumed that jumping the two-foot distance from one cross-beam to the next was beyond the capabilities of an athletic girl….

That day, I discovered the box of clothes, medals and other military paraphernalia from my dad’s WWII tour of duty. I never knew he’d been given those medals! No one ever talked about the War – that was a Black-Frown-We-Don’t-Discuss-This Topic.

When I asked my mother, all she would say was how lucky my dad had been to get home whole – he’d almost lost his leg to gangrene after a long attack when he was a mine-sweeper in Italy.

And all my dad would say about the now-fuzzy diamond-shaped tattoo under his watch was that it reminded him of something that helped keep him sane during the last year he was overseas.

When I heard that, I almost shrugged my shoulders and thought, in my teenage arrogance, “agh, corny!” But the look of adoration and sweetness in his voice was so unusual and completely unmistakable as he gazed at my mother as he said it that I felt bowled over. He never said more, but I bet that diamond meant the one she wore on her left hand.

Did you know you could do this?

As I went through his stuff, I found his old Navy whites. There were 4 pairs of these bell-bottomed trousers. They were intentionally cut that way so that, if sailors fell overboard, the legs could be tied in such as way as to become life-saving bouyancy support (how they do that is still a mystery to me). I loved the softness of the worn cotton and the style and shape of the flap and buttons in the front.

I yanked two pairs out of the box, crept downstairs again and tried them on. I marked them where to cut and where to sew, and modified the pants to fit me.

Go-go girl?!?

I bet you never knew this: I was one of the first go-go girls in NYC. I was working as a hat-check girl/waitress (of course I told them I was 18, right?) in a bar that had live music. When the band took a break, another girl who worked there and I would get up on stage and dance to the canned music.

The manager didn’t want us onstage – he thought it looked “undignified,” and that it would would hurt the bar’s reputation. One night he caught us out and was physically pulling us off the stage, when some of the customers told him to leave it alone and let us dance, shouting, “Go! Go! Go!” She got her own dad’s whites and started wear them onstage, too.

In an old local thrift shop, we discovered some tall, black cossack-looking boots for her, and I found some knee-high boots that looked like D’Artagnon had worn them. We became so attached to our ‘look’ that you’d have had to kill us to get the boots off.

The ‘greats’ – were not, back then –

We watched as, gradually, the bohemians we hung out with in Greenwich Village, where we went to see Bob Dyland and Dave Van Ronk and Woody Guthrie and all, stopped wearing the short, tight-ankled black pants and pointy shoes, and as more and more bell-bottoms and adjusted jeans with embroiodered gussets made their way into rebel fashion–eventually becoming de-rigeur hippy-wear.

What effect have YOU had on the world?

Often, you never really know what kind of effect you have on others until looking back years later.

How did I know my father’s uniform bell-bottoms and those thrift-store boots would be come part of a rage that would last for years? To us it was just something that was fun, different, and felt great.

There had been dancers onstage for eons, but none had ever dressed or danced like we did!

We started it!

We were a small part of the beginnings of a huge movement that is still alive today (thought us old hippies had died out, eh? Wrong! Who do you think are beacons of the green movement?!?)

So if you find yourself bucking the odds and wearing, singing, dancing, writing or creating something that seems totally odd to your friends, family, boss, co-workers or school-masters, keep going!

Don’t stop because someone says, “that isn’t the way it’s done, dear!”

Keep cutting away what feels wrong and out of alignment with your soul, and keep listening to your heart and feeling great.

Because it’s when you feel great that you share yourself, at your best, with the rest of us and the universe. We need you; you need us; we all need each other – at our very, very best.

aloha –
Angela

Fun trivia

Did you know that the kingdom of Bhutan has a policy of supporting its people’s Gross National Happiness. Much cooler than Gross National Products, eh?

What if we all decided we’d care for, build and support our Gross Individual Happiness?
