How to Keep Yourself Focused and On Track Despite the BS

stay-on-track

I hear people say they have such a hard time staying on track–or even imagining their dreams–much less creating them, in today’s economic and political chaos.

Do you get caught there, too?

I say it’s all a big dream anyway, why not make it the way you want it to be?

I mean, why the heck not??

See, what you are perceiving as ‘the environment’ and ‘your life’ is really a package of eye-ear-nose-mouth-skin-mind-energy-felt results of your past decisions.

Your house is the place in which, in the past, you decided to live. That’s a result of your thoughts, words and actions.

Your relationships are the result of the decisions and actions you made in the past.

Your success or lack of it is a result of decisions made in the past.

One decision, many steps

Do I need to go on? I don’t think so. But why is this important? Because in one decision, it can all be changed. And you can keep changing it.

One client reported to me last night that she had made the decision to stop listening to a friend’s negativity, because she felt like it pulled her down and away from her own inspired thoughts and activities.

She decided to just believe in herself and be as positive as she could, and tap on what wasn’t working until it did..

As a direct result of her new empowered vibration, she ended up with new signups to her weekend workshop, three new clients, and any number of other little pieces of evidence of her decision’s effectiveness.

She changed her present to affect what is now her past, and to create a future she loves.

Powerful.

Sudden and Extreme Out of the Blue Breakfast Ecstacy

all-one

I recently had an experience of extreme ecstasy – eating breakfast!

I have a small semi-enclosed area by my house which I use as a studio. When the weather is nice, that’s where I like to eat, sitting in my big comfy chair.

For some reason, I got a wild hair last week and bought Raisin Bran and milk. I virtually never eat cereal or milk, so who knows where that urge came from!

As I was sitting there munching…

I was thinking about how fortunate I felt about having come through a certain hospital bout so easily, and for having really created a foundation for feeling happy despite what went on around me.

I thought of that phrase, “we’re all One.”

Well, I thought, if we really are all One, then there is no separation from me and anything or anyone else.

I put the spoon in my mouth, and suddenly the universe slowed down to a crawl, and I experienced a kind of a flattening – how to describe this – it was as if nothing stood out as any more or less important than anything else, and everything was divinely given, divinely provided.

A Gift

The spoon and cereal became a Gift of the Universe itself, and as I slid it over my tongue, my “regular” perception of my-hand-holding-spoon-feeding-my-face became Universe-feeding-my-soul.

It was as if my hand disappeared, and the food floated there all by itself, ready for me to nurture myself with, almost as a babe does at the breast.

Somehow I was able to extend the experience for about five bite-chew-swallows. It shook me to my roots. My body was trembling and tears were streaming down my face, and my heart felt like it would burst, and for once my chatty mind was completely still.

I felt so happy I was sure I’d explode!

It’s such a strange thing that I had the urge to buy and eat food that, in the past, gave me belly aches, and that I haven’t eaten in at least 30 years. Spirit works in strange ways!

Here’s to bliss for you, too!

Stacey Vornbrock, Professional Sports Performance Expert

stacey

When I had surgery a couple years ago, my friend Stacey Vornbrock helped me heal so much faster that my doc told me I was 2 whole weeks ahead of where ‘normal’ people would ordinarily be after the type of surgery I’d had. He shook his head and told me ‘just keep at it, whatever it is.’ Too bad he wasn’t interested in how I did it!

I’m pretty accustomed to big, rapid results. But when she used her protocols on me, I was astounded at how *much* better I felt and how very fast it happened. I was able to sit up for longer periods of time and have the clear head I needed in order to continue my work. I know I’d have been in pain and a mush-head for far longer without her help.

From shy beginnings….

I watched Stacey start out as a nervous practitioner about bringing EFT to the golf world. Over the past several years she has evolved into an incredibly experienced sports performance expert whose clients are so famous she can’t even talk about them!

She’s gone way beyond the EFT basics, diligently using her very targeted and specific protocols to help people not only excel at sports, but relieve travel trauma (jetlag, altitude and weather changes…) and recover from body injury and surgery. She takes it even further to help bring back natural balance.

I’m so pleased to be able to introduce her to you and the beyond-the-beyond value of the information in the ebooks she has released!

(Can’t wait? Get her books right here!)

body-01 travel-cover-02 injury-3d-3h balance-02

I’m particularly pleased to recommend Stacey and her ebooks because I’ve experienced the results of using her methods myself, so I can recommend them 100% assured that they are not just good, but utterly amazing.

*And,* because I was lucky enough to have the privilege of designing and building the ebooks for her! So I have had pretty intimate contact with each and every page of all four books, cover to cover.

A process she took me through, herself, helped me help my body get rid of the anaesthesia and the  chemicals used in surgery, as well as the antibiotics and pain-killers I was saturated with. I felt nauseous and weak, couldn’t sleep well, and felt as if my guts were in backwards.

After we did the session using the body recovery processes, I felt immediate relief, and my belly felt more like the one I had been born with.

I won’t kid you – I still had low-level belly ache for the week before the last tube was removed – but these protocols (I used at least one of them them every day – I’m no fanatic!) helped me so much I hate to think how I’d have fared without them. I do *not* like pain, so I have been so grateful to have access to these processes!

In Hawaiian, there’s an old word, hele – pronounced HEH-lay – which means ‘get on it and get going’. I invite you to hele on over to her site and grab your own ebooks for yourself!: Get her books right here!

What’s very cool is that Stacey thought long and hard about exactly what you’d need to make your experience using her processes really effective. Here are just two of all the things I love about her books:

1. Rather than getting a book you have to scroll up and down to read (annoying!), she had me design it so it fills your screen horizontally for greater ease of reading, comprehension and tap-along-ability. And yes, you can print them out, of course.

2. And, rather than just getting an ebook, she also took the time to record a full MP3 of the same information so you can listen and tap along as you drive, run, race, walk, and play.

Having worked with her to create these books, I can tell you personally how picky (compliment!) she is – she likes to get things right and make them as clear and usable as possible. She didn’t let one thing get by her!

So – if you want to:

1.  perform at peak levels on a consistent basis
2.  heal quickly after trauma or pain
3.  significantly reduce soreness & pain after workouts
4.  recover physically and mentally after competition
5.  travel anywhere without jetlag, and adjust to new time zones, weather conditions and altitudes easily and quickly
6.  eliminate drugs, antibiotics and other harmful toxins and chemicals from your body
7.  resolve dehydration, extreme fatigue and over-acidity
8.  clear your energy of people, places and substances in your body and system
9.  bring your body back to its natural balance….

…then hele on over (with aloha) to Stacey’s site and get your own copies!

I won’t tell you which is my favorite, because you obviously have different needs. Whether you want to get well or get more fit or travel painlessly, you’ll find your own book to suit.

aloha –
Angela

I Love Susan Boyle’s Big Eyebrows! And her Voice? Oh My….

SUSAN-BOYLE

You probably saw the big hoo-ha when Susan Boyle, the power-voiced gal who made such a hit on the Britain’s Got Talent show, came on stage.

If not, check this out for some real inspiration.

The judges and people in the audience made faces, raised their eyebrows and had clear disappointment and doubts that she could be any good.

Shame on them!

Frankly, I felt embarrassed for the judges and the people in the audience who were so quick to judge Susan Boyle on her looks – she certainly doesn’t have a thing to do with skinny legs, belly-button rings or silky-sexy clothes!

The sheer arrogance of both audience and judges wa astounding – like someone who isn’t dressed in designer clothing can’t possibly have anything to contribute, oh no! Good grief. Where have we come in our supposed culture that we reserve talent for the Pretties?!?

Surprise surprise!

The second she opens her mouth in song, it’s as if a tsunami of energy swamps the hall – within seconds people are on their feet crying, laughing, clapping, yelling in joy and full of the same enormous spirit Susan is radiating. And they keep clapping and shouting for her until after the song is done! Every time I watch it I feel full of the magic and tears and the sheer authenticity of the woman.

There are those who say the staging and setup are all hype; who say she hasn’t got what it takes to go beyond her ’15 minutes of fame;’ that she needs to get ‘with it’ with her clothes and media-presence.

Why? What’s wrong with her the way she is?

Why do we insist that people fit in to our narrow ideals so WE can be comfortable?!? I think she’s more savvy and honest and grounded than the next person, and knows in her heart far better what to do than the flight of pretties who come and go every year.

Susan’s birth was apparently a hard one, with resulting oxygen deprivation and minor brain damage. Perhaps that’s what has kept this golden canary in the shadow so long, not flitting out of the nest as soon as she knew she had a voice that could thrill.

I hope she has all kinds of people around her who can steady her hand amidst the glitz and glimmer and onslaught of media, because if she can sing like she did on that stage, I want to hear more. She has the posture and presence of an opera singer, and belts her song out from the very center of her heart – who could ask for  more?

Frumpy? Or distinct?

Who cares if her eyebrows are thick and powerful? Who cares if her dress is 50s and she walks like an excited five-year old? I think she looked like the embodiment of Heart. Who needs another skimpily-S&M-dressed Madonna or Britney? I say keep those eyebrows!

One report called her a ‘frumpy spinster’ – critics and reviewers somehow feel they have the unalienable right to cut people and their works down in razor-thin slivers. Does it make them feel better to be so denigrating and nasty? If those same people calling her those names were on the stage, I can assure you they’d feel crushed by such comments.

This was a great example of how, when we let our judgments and prejudices and cultural beliefs cloud our eyes, we can be shaken out of our trees in a split second. What a fabulous surprise Susan Boyle is! We should be so lucky as to have her in our lifetime!

No more cynicism!

No more arrogance!

No more judging books by covers!

Yes more asking for and claiming your Dreams – go Susan!

Head into the Wind and Hold onto the Helm Despite the Fear

sailing

Have you felt the energy lately?

Doesn’t it feel crazy?

Pay attention here, because this can be one of the most powerful times of your life.

The lull

As a kid sailing out on Long Island Sound and on the Atlantic, I learned about the lull.

Each time I encountered storms I noticed a funny thing. That almost always before a storm – even a small squall – there was a split-second lull before the energies shifted and the storm came and broke on top of us.

Where we had been cutting clean through the water, all sails smooth and everything functioning well, there was an almost indistinguishable moment when everything seemed to just *** pause.

Just for a moment

You could see the waves flatten out momentarily, feel the wind get shifty and the eyes of your crew as they look at you for direction. The air gets a yellowish tinge, and a fine, smooth greyish line of light on the horizon starts to approach you on the water as the darkening skies lower themselves atop your boat.

As skipper, your attention has to include your crew and what each one is doing, your boat and how it feels under your seat, the helm and how it’s acting in your hands, the wind and what it’s doing on the water and in your sails, the water and what’s under its depths, where you are n relation to everything around you, and, of course, the weather in general.

Life-changing choices

You suddenly feel very small on a very vast ocean. And you know instinctively that the choices you make in this split-second lull are paramount to your survival.

If you’re close enough to one, you might make it to a sheltering cove where you can drop sails and a wind-anchor, and point your boat upwind to keep it steady as the storm rages around you.

But if you can’t, you need to move fast.

Switch on your GPS beacon.

Reef or drop all sails immediately, secure anything movable to the decks, make sure all crew has life jackets on and are tethered to the boat – including yourself – and again, head into the wind.

Listen to what I just said:

You stop, pay attention, make a choice.

When you’ve chosen, you take action: you stop all generated movement, take precautionary measures to protect your self and crew and possessions, and face the wind.

Why face the wind?

Because it means you’re offering the least resistance to the storm. The bow, or front, of your boat is pointed, and cuts through the water and helps you climb over the waves, even if they are three times higher than your mast.

Because if those waves hit you side on, you’re toast – they’ll flip you over so fast you won’t know left from right. And they’ll keep pounding you.

Because if you face the wind, you can ride it,
rather than being ridden.

It takes strength to ride a storm. The wind will try to rip you around and propel you where you don’t want to go. The force of the water will try to take the helm from your hands, and the gusts, rain and swells will try to sweep you overboard, fill your bilges and try to swamp you.

But if you’ve been smart enough to be prepared, if you keep your mind clear and calm, your crew ready and efficient and your hands firmly on the helm, even if the storm lasts for a day or three, you’ll make it. You’ll make it.

Your mast and other parts of your boat might get broken or washed overboard, you may be mighty hungry from not being able to take time to eat, you may be exhausted, cold and soaked through to the bone, but you’ll make it.

Right now

Right now, in our specific time, I can feel the air like the frisson of electricity in the air before a hurricane.

Right now is the time when you need to make your choice: run for a safe cove or haul all your sails down, make sure your crew is safe, lash everything securely, head to the wind and keep your helm with courage, strength and clarity.

Most of us don’t have a safe cove, whether financial or otherwise. Without making a clear, conscious choice right now to create safety and even a new reality for themselves, people are sitting ducks for a reality of crisis and disaster. Since ‘news’ about that is consistently regurgitated on the news day in and day out, it’s easy to buy into.

Don’t be like them.

Make the choice to ride the storm with calm and grace.

Pull as many sails down as you can – cut your excesses and clear out any distractions. Maintain your headway – be clear on your purpose, intentions and destination.

Keep your crew safe. Make sure your family, friends and loved ones are safely ensconced within your heart, and tell them how important they are to you. Do everything you can to support their lives and potential.

I’m not saying be a sappy-corny mush-mush! Just look them in the eye and smile, or squeeze their hands, or say quietly that they’re the most important thing in the world to you. Be real, and say it as often as you can from your heart – even if it’s in actions rather than words.

If you’ve had a crisis where people have helped you out,
you know how important being loved is.

Dish it out the same way you’d like to receive it.

Make sure your life-jacket is on

Make sure your inner GPS is connected – that inner light within you that knows exactly what to do how and when. And LISTEN to it.

Always, always hang onto your helm.
Never, ever let go.

You’re the caption of your destiny. Even if you have only a sliver of an idea where you’re going, your inner GPS and your determination to hold onto the helm – your integrity, your knowingness about who you are and your values – will get you through any storm.

If you panic now, during this lull, well, I wish you the best. If you keep thinking fearfully about the disaster, disaster is what you get.

If you understand that even things that look ‘bad’ can turn out to be miracles and blessings, miracles and blessings are what you get.

If you can keep from panicking and hold onto what is dear to you and keep imagining that something amazing is about to happen, it will.

In the accelerated energies of now, things shift in the blink of an eye – can you keep up with it? Can you let go of the flotsam and jetsam of old beliefs and judgments enough to see the gleam of the sun as it begins to shine through, even as the storm rages?

Head into the wind!

Face your daily circumstances with courage and the conviction that you can and will not only make it through this storm, but end up in an incredible harbor you never realized existed.

What’s that new harbor like? If you could have any wish, and could create that harbor, what would it be full of? Fill it now in your mind so you can head to the wind and end up there.

Take advantage of the lulls. Don’t be fooled into thinking everything will return to what we used to call normal. It won’t. We’re in a time of massive shift, and it’s our opportunity to face it and create, even under what seem to be the most dire circumstances.

Stop trying to Get

Get more status, wealth, money, success – whatever it is you constantly strive for. None of that is important now. Take a breath and let material things be material things, not the focus of your attention.

Give it up. Literally – raise your hands above your head and shout, I give it Up! I give it all to That, the I Am! And trust that the Great I Am has had you in its hands all along.

What IS important is to expand your inner knowing, your inner light, to live it and share it. Strive to Be – the clearest, hummingest, brightest light you can be. That’s it. Simple, but by no means always easy.

You’re a part of the Great Circle, and we all need you and your clear energy, just as you need us and our clear energy.

It’s Time. Right NOW.

Helena Summer Medena: Amazing Help and Support

helena

I want to publicly acknowledge how incredible Helena Summer Medena was when I had to spend time in the hospital for surgery. Yes, she is my friend, but she is also a determined ally in the face of stress or hurt.

She sacrificed a huge amount of her time last week to visit me, hold my hand and be my verbal advocate while I was too doped up to know up from down.

The night she brought me in, she stayed with me until I was finally admitted to the hospital at 3 a.m. – even though her ride had long gone and she had to find another to get home!

She also helped me tap (even though I was so sensitive I’d pull my hand away!), and is one of the finest EFT leaders I’ve met.

I want to suggest to you that she would be as good an ally for you in whatever it is you’d like to move through in your quest to live a more healthy, peaceful and abundant life, and that if you want her services, she is well worth way more than her nominal fees.

I asked her what she does when she speaks with a new client, and here is part of her reply:

“We talk a little, I give them 30 minutes of  conditional consult, and then we schedule a minimum 3 sessions.

“Brand new online? I introduce them to skype and see if that would work or phone… tell them about what to expect….

“With all of them I make sure that I am interested in them, that I feel like we are a good match and that we can achieve what they want.

“I tell them all that EFT is not magic, but super powerful… I make sure they feel heard and we go with scheduling.

When she says she “makes sure she is interested,” I can tell you from personal experience that she puts her all into it.

She has no idea I’m doing this, so no, this is not a concerted publicity campaign. She’ll probably cry when she reads this –

Please do consider availing yourself of her considerable love, care and talented intuition and gifts using EFT and other energy modalities. You can check her out, as I’m sure you probably know by now, at LivDelicious.com.

much love and aloha to you,
Angela

The Black Madonna, Carved by Hand from Black Soapstone

BLACK-MADONNA

This is the Black Madonna (and her child) after about 15 carving sessions.

The stone you see with my glasses on top is what this piece looked like at the start. You can see my hammer next to it.

I carve all by hand, using small chisel and files called rifflers. I carve at about 2 or 3 hours at a time, although sometimes I’ll put in a full day. Hard to do as it’s pretty tiring work. Imagine swinging a 2-pound hammer all day – you get tired!

It probably will take me a good 45 to 60 hours total to finish this using just hand tools. If I were using air tools, it’d go monstrously faster, but I like the pace of hand tools.

I raised the hand on our right up so you can now see the child’s belly and the top of her thighs. It looked way too ponderous the way it was before. You actually have more latitude for moving elements around than you’d think, and I push the envelope as far as I can!

I wanted her to look like a mother, not a girl-friend, so I made the chins swing away from each other – this way they are pressing foreheads together, and that’s it. I also took away a lot of that heavy hair on the side.

Now it seems to me to be a double entendre: is it a child imagining being held by her mother? Or is it a mother holding her child? Or maybe it’s a child imagining herself as an adult, or dreaming an angel. I like to think of it as a mother transmitting her innate wisdom to her child. Now you make up your story about it!

Are You Living Your Heart’s Deepest Dreams NOW? No? Why Not?

pots

Way back in November of 1981, after almost 20 years of having been a fine art potter, I decided to take the next step. It was time to make the move from making pots – upon which I drew very detailed designs in black and white – to carving 3-d figures in stone.

I had just been introduced to carving-stone by an old friend, and I was hot to trot. I couldn’t stop thinking or dreaming about it, and I even now had stone in my studio just sitting there begging to be carved.

From everywhere and everyone I heard, “Oh, Angela! You shouldn’t stop making your beautiful pots!” But I just knew it was Right for me.

Although I had been supporting myself and my 2 kids on my pots, and it was really scary to think of selling off my clay, glazes, kilns and all the stuff having to do with creating my pots, on December 25th, I told my kids that I had decided I’d stick with making pots for one more year so I could have a smooth transition into carving stone.

Oops – nevermind that plan!

And at 11:43 am on December 31st, I was slammed not once, but twice in a car wreck that completely totalled my car and left my neck and back so damaged that I was told I’d probably never walk again.

Lying in bed, drowsy from pain pills, I heard…

Lyon-sc-hula-kahiko-gourd-700-sigOne was saying that it was such a shame I’d never walk again, and if I’d never decided to quit making pots I’d still be OK, shame on me, why couldn’t I ever take anyone’s advice.

Another very firmly told the first one to stuff itself in its own dark place, and that it was because I had something to Do that I had to continue carving–even if I had to do it sitting down.

And yet another that told both of them just to be still, please, because the universe is a mutable essence, and if we could all work together, we could heal my body and not only get me walking again but carving and carrying big rocks around as if I was a 20-year old again.

I loved that last voice!

It made me feel so supported and so powerful. From the inside out. And although I was flat on my back and in too much pain to move, I felt as if I had a rocket inside of me that simply had to take off, that wouldn’t allow me to sit and stew or feel sorry for myself or stop seeking assistance in getting back on my feet.

I went to 3 ‘experts’

All of them wore long, grave faces, closed their office doors sooo carefully and quietly, sat down and gazed at me solemnly across their desks. They each spoke in hushed tones, as if I was already one foot under.

By the third one, I was livid. Boiling. I refused to put up with their cemented belief that I’d be crippled for the rest of my life.

I fired all three, went home feeling curiously light, happy, and utterly trusting that someone would show up for me.

Ahhh…Real help!

The very next day, I was introduced quite by chance (right!) to a chiropractor who lived a half a block away! Within 6 weeks he had me walking again, and most of the aches and pains and stiffnesses and knots in my neck and back gone.

Needless to say, I decided to uphold my original choice to move on from pots. The Universe had spoken, and I listened. I’ve been carving stone ever since, going into painting and illustrating on the side.

Walk your dreams

And I’m going to continue to talk my walk, and continue updating you on the techniques, systems and tactics I take and that I hear about and think are great that will help you walk your dreams.

Why is it so important that we do so now, of all times?

Because if we get caught in oh-the-economy-is-bad-woe-is-me-what-am-I-gonna-do BS, we’ll stay there.

Focus

You know as well as I do that we get that upon which we focus. Focus with me and all the other aligned people who are knowingly, trustingly, joyously creating life the way we want to live: conscious, conscious, conscious!

It’s Time–NOW. We have enough information about how to create what we want, we have enough resources and connections to build the world we want, and we have the guts, the minds and the heart. I refuse to even imagine our not doing it.

Look at interruptions and pain and illness and obstacles as messages, not blocks.

Look at them and ask, “where is the energy in this that I could use to create something better–for myself, my loved ones and my world?”

Then ask…

What is the first thing I can do, what is the first step I can take towards something I’d rather have or be or do?

What can I say in my mind that will keep me from the perpetual downward spiral of why-me and oh-I’m-stuck by asking yourself what would I rather see/feel/do/have?

What is my next step on my continued path, holding the space for the Dream?

Why ask these Qs?

Because it’s right here, right now, and all we need to do is let it expand within our hearts and minds and lives.

INSPIRATION

Here are SOME of the most radical, most heart-swelling videos I’ve ever seen.

Here is how one jaded young man woke up and changed his mind and has now helped thousands of people all over the world get clean water.

Not only that, but he has developed an amazing charity structure that allows ALL–yes, 100%–of the monies donated be used for the intended people and purposes.

What IS Success to You? What is Your Soul’s Deepest Desire?

love-selling

What, really, *is* success–to you? And why would you want it? What will you do once you attain success? How will you contribute? With whom will you share your joy, your money, your time, your talents, gifts and skills?

This is what is important, not the just the money. I had a deep breakthrough a few years ago when I read Lynne Twist’s book, The Soul of Money, when I read that she defines money as a vehicle that allows you to fulfill your soul’s deepest desires. My heart flipped into a new position–at last I could contribute and receive money and it was OK!

Wow! That was a far cry from the bland, uninspiring definitions I’d heard before: it’s just ‘an energy exchange,’ ‘a vehicle of commerce,’ ‘neutral energy,’ and so on.

I used to hate selling

I felt ashamed to want money–like it was some spiritually bad thing to have anything to do with. Now I saw that I could acquire it and use it and it was OK–that I could allow it to come and go through my hands so I could contribute *and* feel fulfilled and valuable.

And then someone asked me this:

What if you thought of each dollar as a unit of appreciation? Like every time you get paid for something, someone is saying, ‘thank you, I appreciate what you’ve done for me.’ I love that! So now each time I pay my bills, I’m saying thank you to that company or person for the service rendered.

What is wrong with selling yourself?

If we remember that the root of the word ‘to sell’ means to serve, it looks like a different animal, doesn’t it? The manner of selling is what counts. It isn’t serving to push yourself and your goods on anyone. That will end up–especially in this day and age where everyone down to a one-year old is suspicious of salesmen–in your being pushed away.

Rather, what would happen if you simply shared with people what you love about your work? What results you get with your clients? What they get out of your work? Then you are in integrity, staying in your own space and not intruding on theirs, and they get to choose whether or not what you do resonates with them or is anything they’d like to try out.

If you don’t tell people, they won’t find you!

Because believe me, in this busy world, if people don’t hear about you and your work, two very sad things happen: the people who want and need what you do never hear of you and they miss out receiving the benefits of your gifts, and you miss out on contributing to them and feeling fulfilled because you helped those people. Everyone loses.

We need your services and products.
We need YOU and your gifts and talents.
We need you to prosper so you can continue on your fulfillment journey.
We also need you to prosper as an example for what we can do, too.

I want you to feel fulfilled, humble, proud and excited, rather than bashful, afraid and ashamed of selling and of your desire for money.

Money helps you feel appreciated and supported. What’s wrong with that?

Each dollar is a Unit of Appreciation you give and receive.

Selling is letting people know about your passion and what it does for people in a way they can receive and make an informed choice.

So money and selling seem like different animals now, don’t they?

Does that help?

It sure would have helped me tremendously to be able to think like that way back when I was still starving! I’d have been able to see myself and my role in life in an entirely different light, and thoughts of ending that life would have never occurred to me–they sure don’t anymore!

I used to picture millionaires as greedy, hand-wringing money-mongers. For some reason that image–like the skinny, black suited Bad Guys in cartoons–stuck with me for years, although I really did know better.

Don’t let that image wreck your relationship with money.

Instead, allow the thought of money as an instrument of fulfillment inspire you to think of your soul’s Deepest Desire. And then go about fulfilling that Desire as a Sacred Mission, step by step.

The Wisdom Book: An Exquisite Work by Andrew Zuckerman

wisdom-bk

A friend turned me on to the book, Wisdom: With Three New Interviews by Andrew Zuckerman

If you have not seen it, you must!

The entire book, from conception to organization, execution, display and presentation, every inch of the refinement and excellence of this work is unparalleled.

Talk about compelling.

It’s an enormous opus presenting the most beautiful photos and interviews of wise people over 70. Every inch of the process is painstakingly thought-out and seamlessly integrated to produce one of the finest books and websites (and documentary on itself!) that I’ve seen in a long time

Andrew Zuckerman is a master of simplicity and elegance.

zuck-bkHe discusses his process and each person, and even how he packed the bags and how they set up the film sets in order to ‘democratize’ the settings for each interviewee.

When I first went to check it out, I had to unglue myself after an hour of fascination, so be aware that it will pull you in–in a most wonderful way.

The Wisdom Book is an exquisitely filmed group of elders sharing their wisdom unabashedly and quixotically and vulnerably. What a breath of fresh air! It’s about time we stopped being so obsessed with our youth culture and remembered to have some respect for our elders!

I think you’ll love it, too. Get it here: Wisdom: With Three New Interviews

Sweet Music, Sweet Days in Old-Timey Aloha-Filled Hawaii

kaneohe-bey

I’m remembering how it used to be here in Hawaii before it got so populated. I came to Maui in 1966, and later lived for years on the island of Kauai in the tiny town of Kekaha, which was built up around a sugar plantation.

At times the cane fields would be burnt in preparation for harvesting. The flames would rise up higher than our rooftops, and the smoke and the sweet smell of molasses permeated everything.

(Image is of my painting is Kaneohe Bay, original oil)

HAOLES

My kids and I were the only haoles (white people) in a mostly Filipino settlement. They thought I was weird because, as an artist working for myself, I didn’t work for the plantation – and I thought they were weird for making blood pudding, eating dried, smelly sardines and killing pigs under my window once a month. But after a while the hard edges of our judgements wore off and I was honored that we eventually became an accepted part of that group of really wonderful people.

TALK STORY

We used to gather spontaneously on someone’s back steps near the beach in the afternoon, break out the guitars, ukuleles, beer and sodas and our kids would run around as we talked story and sang Hawaiian songs and gobbled tons of local food.

SWEET, PUNNY MUSIC

Today I found a site with music like we used to sing, and wanted to share it with you because the music gives such a taste of what it felt like then–slow, uncomplicated, sweet, and sometimes very funny.

The Hawaiian language is full of puns–with four, five, even six levels of meaning with every well-thought phrase–so a song about a man’s prowess surfing could be taken many ways! The impromptu hulas we did when we sang them were always a source of hilarity. If you go here you will see a list of sample songs.

The music is acoustic slack-key guitar. The guitar first came to Hawaii in the 19th century with the Mexican cowboys (paniolos), but when they left, no one could figure out how to tune them. They ‘slacked’ the strings, until a single chord was formed in what they call ‘open’ tuning. A whole tradition has grown up around that sound, and these songs are little bitty samples of the feeling of the islands.

I especially love the song Ku`ulei `Awapuhi (Ku’ulei means beloved, awapuhi is the local yellow ginger that grows abundantly in the forests.) because it really sounds like what we used to play those afternoons. You may not like it, but to me it always brings me to my heart and makes me weep. It wasn’t always that way–there are many songs here where the guys sing in falsetto, and when I first heard them I could hardly believe my ears. But now the music is so ingrained in me I hear it and the ocean sweeps through me, the moonlit nights, bird calls and forest sounds fill me and I feel full and content.

The song Pu`uanahulu is a good example of some sweet slack key guitar playing. Pua Sadinia makes me cry every time I hear it, although I know perfectly well it’s a rendition of a haole song….Ka Uluwehi O Ke Kai sounds exactly like the un-mainland-influenced songs in the early 60s.

If you want to hear some really incredible Hawaiian sounds, get any album by Iz, Israel Kamakawiwo`ole (kah MAka veevoh OH-ley), a humble, sweet, talented singer whose heart gave out after a long battle with obesity, whose rendition of ‘Over the Rainbow’ has been played and celebrated world-wide. Here’s my favorite album of his, Alone in the World.

There are other albums there on that site with plenty of examples of the real Hawaiian music. Nowadays it’s permeated with rap and rock, and the older songs with sharp cutting chants and the wavering older people’s voices is fading out. But that’s what happens–music changes to reflect time times and the people living in them.

Look for music from some of the best: Keola and Kapono Beamer, Olomana, Palani Vaughn, Gabby, Cyril and Sonny  Pahinui, Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo`ole, Sonny Chillingsworth, Peter Moon, Ozzie Kotani, Ledward Kaapana….

What’s Holding You Back from Living Your Deepest Dreams?

out-on-a-limb

Why not go out on a limb? That’s where all the fruit is.
–Will Rogers

In this day and age where it seems that everything hangs in suspense–a new US president, a supposedly failing economy, stocks tanking–why not be outrageous and actually go for your dreams?

What’s holding you back?

What would happen if you actually (gasp!) DID create the dream you have deep in your heart? What if, instead of doing what you think you’re supposed to do, you act from your Deep Heart and step towards your Dream?

OMIGOD–you might be happy! You might achieve success and have more money! You might be able to help even more people than you serve right now! Can you handle it? What will you do with all that money and success and new space? Who will you be? How will you behave? Good questions–might want to ponder on that so you can actually make it come true!

Here’s the important thing

It’s not about “how can I survive” these days at all. Because these days will continue whether you make it or not, and days will continue to go up and down in relative ‘goodness’ and ‘badness’ no matter what you or I or the lampost do.

It’s about keeping your focus
on your inner directive.

That Singular Reason you do what you do, be who you are. Keep your eye on that, keep your heart open and your actions aligned with that.

Do that, always asking yourself, ‘what is one small thing I can do to keep creating my dream?” Even if only taking a little bitty breath is all you can do right now. More space will open for you as you continue to breathe, re-connect, breathe, take action, and so on.

I send you love, support and strength!

How to Reclaim Your Power Even When Things Look too Scary

reclaim-power

We have an unprecedented opportunity right now to quit looking at the “way things are” as being bad, scary or harmful, and discover how to take the energy that is freely floating around and use it to create the kind of world WE want.

Only one place to start

And the only place it can start is with you and me, in our own tiny little lives.

Yes, we are little within the Big Picture, but as we all know, one little tiny life added to another added to another can make a very, very VERY big impact.

Remember John Denver’s song What Can One Man Do? One man, one woman, one child can act according to his or her inner truth, stick to it, be passionate, and stick to it, sing, write, paint, teach, work in alignment with that inner passion, stick to it–imagine if we ALL, each and every one of us–refused to hang out in poor-poor-me, poor-powerless me anymore.

Imagine if we simply went about seeing, feeling, and doing–LIVING–our passionate dreams!

Imagine what our world would transform into really, really quickly–I bet we could create it within only two generations, maybe less.

I’m not kidding when I say it’s up to you and me. I really really mean it.

How do we do it?

Get all 5 Wealth Maverick Series: All 5 Wealth audios

Quit thinking of the world as having “gone wrong”

Because what’s happening now is *right* if you remember that we can literally use the energy of what is happening right now to make new choices.

You might be thinking of how you’re going to lose this, that or the other. So what if you do? Any material possession is replaceable.

The correct question: “What will you do next?”

Your time on earth is not replaceable.

Nor is your heart, your life, or your voice – especially if you keep silent and don’t share your joy, love and dreams.

So how do you stay out of fear and reclaim your power?

How do you stay out of worry for yourself, your kids, your home, your finances–and have the strength to carry on and keep focused on your highest dreams?

How do you create your dreams?

1. Create a clear picture/feeling of what you want
2. Intend it and build passion about it
3. Transform your limiting energy into power
4. KNOW that you can create it and have it
5. Take focused steps to create that
6. When you fall away from the dream-path, step back, reassess
7. Correct. And do it again. And again. And again.
6. Make sure you have massive support.

Power! What power do you have?

Are you shuddering when I talk about power? We’re brought up to shun power. Yes! Shun the power OVER, but don’t shun the power of Love.

You need personal power just to exist in the world. To get more of it, you harvest every last shred of so-called “negative” energy in your body, mind, emotions and life and turn it into the power to create.

You’ve got to find and claim your energy

Then transform it into power, and use it.

Once you transform your “negative” energy, you’ll have ten times the amount of impact once you align it with your positive, passionate dreams for creativity and joy.

I invite you to transform your fear, worry, doubt–even the feelings of procrastination and paralysis you’ve been having!

I invite you to get all 5 Wealth Maverick Audios: All 5 Wealth audios

You can listen to the recording right on your computer or download it and load it on your iPod or MP3 player.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY:

Hi Angela,

I wanted to say THANK YOU for your words. I have been scrupulously avoiding the news, even while my husband can’t seem to get enough, and still the feeling of panic has threatened to grip me.

Your words and most of all your courageous focus on the Good, as well as your constant generosity remind me of Who I Really Am and help me to keep my focus on what I want.

Sorry – Bill Gates Ain’t Gonna Pay You! – Avoid Being A Scammer

gates

You know those emails (and now facebook posts!) that say if you send on the email you’ll get paid thousands of dollars by Bill Gates? Sorry ’bout that. Scam.

Four things to do

Here are four ways you can keep your friends, family and acquaintances un-spammed and happy with you.

1. Don’t yell

Did you know that WHEN YOU TYPE IN ALL CAPITALS it’s considered yelling? Don’t do that. It’s hard to read, and people will yell at you for doing it.

Refrain from panicked email subject lines like PLEEEEASE READ. Most emails with subject lines like that are blatantly spam.

If you want your email opened and given proper respect, use both Upper and Lower case letters.

2. How to send out mass emails without everyone yelling at you

If you send out notes to a group from your regular email carrier and not from your auto-responder, never, ever, ever, EVER use Cc (carbon copy).

ALWAYS use Bcc (blind carbon copy). If your email carrier doesn’t have Bcc, then don’t send out mass notes from it. Period. Find another way. Sign up for an autoresponder system like 1AutomationWiz.com or a mass emailing system like constantcontact.com of one kind or other.

Why? Because down the line, that note that you Cc’d people, which thenceforth went to more people and then more people–every single one of them with every single email address sitting there like lame ducks waiting to get shot, whose recipients passed it on–one day, a spammer is going to see all those lovely lines of email addresses and use them for his spamming (or hers). It’s called email address spam harvesting.

When you use Cc, you have turned into an indirect spammer. Don’t do it. Use Bcc. Got that? Third….

3. Don’t use scammy subject lines

When you get notes with subject lines like PLEEEEASE READ, and they tell you something like Bill Gates can track every email you send and will pay you ten cents or something ridiculous don’t believe it! He can’t track your emails! Good grief! He wouldn’t want to! NO, sorry, he won’t send you any money! And if he could track your emails, isn’t that just a little bit spooky??? Grow up!

4. Check to see if it’s real

Check with snopes.com every time you get a note like that, and you will find that they are NOT for real.

Save yourself the embarrassment of having to write your list and tell them it wasn’t a real email and that you are embarrassed and won’t ever, ever do it again. Don’t send them out in the first place.

What to do when you get an email with PLEEEEASE READ in the subject line?

Hit delete. BEFORE you read it.

No, it really won’t be anything you might miss.

No, it won’t be anything important your far-away cousin sent you.

No, it has not one good thing about it at all–unless you’re a spammer, in which case it will have hundreds of email addresses innocent ignorant people have allowed to circulate endlessly.

Please, do the rest of us a big favor, and be a savvy emailer, OK? Delete those things as fast as you get them, and help keep those addresses out of harm.

Check with snopes.com, OK? Thanks.

The stories she heard about how those guys survive the tough time out in the warzones inspired her so much that she set up InspireMeToday.com so they could have an inspiring story, a video they can watch, and a short and a long MP3 they can listen to on their iPods or MP3 players every day. Anyone can listen to and get inspiration from these stories and inspirational messages.

Don’t Stop Because Someone Says, “That isn’t the way it’s done!”

hippies

In the 60s, I lived in New York City. Somehow, although I was surrounded with artists, musicians, poets and writers on a daily basis at the art school I attended, my parents expected me to keep myself suspended from that reality and “keep pure of mind”. I had no clue whatever that meant!

Suffice it to say that if they actually thought about it and realized that I was hanging out with these people, my very straight folks would have had apoplexy and keeled over on the spot.

The attic

One Sunday afternoon when I was visiting my folks, I had a wild urge to sneak up into the attic. We were expressly forbidden the attic because it was “unsafe.”

Unsafe, meaning that, over the broad expanse of most of the attic there was no floor, with only a small section at the far end covered with enough plywood to allow a small stack of old boxes to not fall through to the floors below. Of course, it was assumed that jumping the two-foot distance from one cross-beam to the next was beyond the capabilities of an athletic girl….

That day, I discovered the box of clothes, medals and other military paraphernalia from my dad’s WWII tour of duty. I never knew he’d been given those medals! No one ever talked about the War – that was a Black-Frown-We-Don’t-Discuss-This Topic.

When I asked my mother, all she would say was how lucky my dad had been to get home whole – he’d almost lost his leg to gangrene after a long attack when he was a mine-sweeper in Italy.

And all my dad would say about the now-fuzzy diamond-shaped tattoo under his watch was that it reminded him of something that helped keep him sane during the last year he was overseas.

When I heard that, I almost shrugged my shoulders and thought, in my teenage arrogance, “agh, corny!” But the look of adoration and sweetness in his voice was so unusual and completely unmistakable as he gazed at my mother as he said it that I felt bowled over. He never said more, but I bet that diamond meant the one she wore on her left hand.

Did you know you could do this?

As I went through his stuff, I found his old Navy whites. There were 4 pairs of these bell-bottomed trousers. They were intentionally cut that way so that, if sailors fell overboard, the legs could be tied in such as way as to become life-saving bouyancy support (how they do that is still a mystery to me). I loved the softness of the worn cotton and the style and shape of the flap and buttons in the front.

I yanked two pairs out of the box, crept downstairs again and tried them on. I marked them where to cut and where to sew, and modified the pants to fit me.

Go-go girl?!?

I bet you never knew this: I was one of the first go-go girls in NYC. I was working as a hat-check girl/waitress (of course I told them I was 18, right?) in a bar that had live music. When the band took a break, another girl who worked there and I would get up on stage and dance to the canned music.

The manager didn’t want us onstage – he thought it looked “undignified,” and that it would would hurt the bar’s reputation. One night he caught us out and was physically pulling us off the stage, when some of the customers told him to leave it alone and let us dance, shouting, “Go! Go! Go!” She got her own dad’s whites and started wear them onstage, too.

In an old local thrift shop, we discovered some tall, black cossack-looking boots for her, and I found some knee-high boots that looked like D’Artagnon had worn them. We became so attached to our ‘look’ that you’d have had to kill us to get the boots off.

The ‘greats’ – were not, back then –

We watched as, gradually, the bohemians we hung out with in Greenwich Village, where we went to see Bob Dyland and Dave Van Ronk and Woody Guthrie and all, stopped wearing the short, tight-ankled black pants and pointy shoes, and as more and more bell-bottoms and adjusted jeans with embroiodered gussets made their way into rebel fashion–eventually becoming de-rigeur hippy-wear.

What effect have YOU had on the world?

Often, you never really know what kind of effect you have on others until looking back years later.

How did I know my father’s uniform bell-bottoms and those thrift-store boots would be come part of a rage that would last for years? To us it was just something that was fun, different, and felt great.

There had been dancers onstage for eons, but none had ever dressed or danced like we did!

We started it!

We were a small part of the beginnings of a huge movement that is still alive today (thought us old hippies had died out, eh? Wrong! Who do you think are beacons of the green movement?!?)

So if you find yourself bucking the odds and wearing, singing, dancing, writing or creating something that seems totally odd to your friends, family, boss, co-workers or school-masters, keep going!

Don’t stop because someone says, “that isn’t the way it’s done, dear!”

Keep cutting away what feels wrong and out of alignment with your soul, and keep listening to your heart and feeling great.

Because it’s when you feel great that you share yourself, at your best, with the rest of us and the universe. We need you; you need us; we all need each other – at our very, very best.

aloha –
Angela

Dianne LeGro, Singer and Speaking Coach Extraordinaire

legro

I remember when my little brother was very little, he was a merry little guy, and he used to go out into the day with a song on his lips.

He was always humming or singing, and later on, playing his guitar. Now as an adult, he has his own band. It was so great growing up next to such a vibrant, happy individual.

It was like that for expert Voice Trainer Dianne Legro, too – always singing, humming, listening to nature, bringing her songs with herself wherever she went as a child. She sang so much that she ended up singing (with her “large voice”) at her church at age 6, and was a full-on member of the acting community at the tender age of 12.

I invite you to listen in as Dianne and I talk about all the inspiring, daring things she has done, what that took for her, and the amazing support she got (like, from noen other than Mary Rockefeller!), and how she fell naturally right into coaching people for becoming great speakers with sensational careers.

She doesn’t do just voice training–not this gal! She includes body, content, booking *and* marketing training–the whole package, so you can be a great speaker and be booked everywhere.

Not too long ago, if you’d told Joe Nunziata, the Spiritual Selling expert, that he would be helping people become successful by understanding spiritual principles and clearing their chakras, he’d have laughed heartily.

He was pretty stuck, declaring bankruptcy twice and losing everything dear to him.

How did he shift?

How to Have True Grit as You Create Your Chosen Reality

kress-site

Here’s a quote that I loved from a book I read this week about people in the future called “Yanked Out  of Time.”

Think about it this way…

I invite you to read the quote as you think about the way you create your own reality.

“Grit isn’t fearlessness… And it isn’t insisting other people do what you want. Grit is finding other ways to get something done even when people refuse to cooperate with you.

“It isn’t pushing other people around. Instead, it’s not giving up, even if you have to try twenty-eight different plans before one works. It’s persistence in the face of fear.”

– Nancy Kress & David Brin, “Yanked Out of Time”

Creating your reality has four elements:

  • know what you want,
  • know you can have it,
  • take whatever action required to receive it (including clearing old non-supporting beliefs, habits and emotions), AND
  • persist in the focusing, expecting, acting, navigating–until it does come.

Why? Because what you want doesn’t always appear instantaneously or even overnight. It takes a certain level of something we call grit!

Do you have the grit required to create your own Dreams? I bet you do, because you’re a Daring Dreamer, too!

Yanked Out of Time

“In the twenty-fourth century…when mysterious aliens nicknamed Givers came and gave humanity the ability to reach the stars with transporters, humans were no longer prepared to face the dangers of a new frontier. As special problems arise, they search through time for special individuals with “grit” and bring them forward to help out.”

GET the book here: Yanked! (David Brin’s Out of Time)

Nancy Kress is the author of fourteen books of fantasy and science fiction, including both novels and short-story collections.

David Brin has written or contributed to a dozen works of fiction and science fiction, has a Ph.D. in astrophysics, and has been a professor and a NASA consultant.

How to Write Thousands Without Feeling Nervous

write

It’s an amazing thing to have thousands of people read your emails weekly.

It used to frighten me at first, because my mailing list grew so fast, and I had never written to more than one person at a time before. I was so afraid I’d put people off.

But as I went along, I got more and more comfortable, because I shifted from, “Oh no, what if I blow it, what will they think about what I say,” and a whole slew of other fears. I was afraid of what you, the people on my list, thought of me, my work and what I had to say.

How do you sit down and write thousands of people?

People ask me all the time:

  • Isn’t it hard?
  • How do you keep from feeling overwhelmed?
  • How do you know what to write?

I was speaking about this the other day with a friend who also has a large mailing list. We were laughing about how hard it was at first to write these newsletters until we started thinking about it differently.

I told her how I think about my readers and carry them all around with me wherever I go, and she laughed and said, yeah, I do that, too.

Do you care? Really care?

After a couple months of writing my list, I realized how much I really do care about my readers, and how passionate I am about what I do and believe in, and about wanting you to have the very best of anything I can create or make available to you.

I started seeing that, if I didn’t believe in myself
or my work, my readers certainly wouldn’t!

So I asked myself this: if I was Jack Canfield or Oprah or one of those “out-there” people who are so passionate about what they do, what would I write and say?

What results would I want my readers to have?

How could I write about it all so my readers would really get what I was saying and get the Goods from my products and services?

Ahhhh, relief!

As soon as I started writing from that frame of mind, I felt such relief, because I understood that you wouldn’t have signed up for the newsletter if you weren’t attracted to *something* about what you see on my sites.

And I saw that the ones who unsubscribe are not criticizing or mad, they’re just not interested anymore, or feel overwhelmed, and my stuff is low on their priority lists. It’s OK. I stopped taking it personally, and started to get really excited about writing every week about what is important to me with people to who appreciate and get great benefits from it, too.

Cruising…

I take about an hour every day to cruise online, looking for things that tweak my oh-this-is-cool buttons. Stuff from TED.com, funny stuff, stuff from folks who have great programs or ingenious or innovative energy therapies or consciousness-raising ideas and solutions.

And I take the best of those and share them with you. It used to feel like work, long ago. But now it’s fun and I look forward to writing you, because I’m passionate about what I do.

The results I see people get from using the info I share is well worth the time it takes, and I get tremendous pleasure from carrying you around in my heart!

Are you just starting up?

So if you are writing or starting up a newsletter and you don’t know where to begin, start with what you love, what you are passionate about.

Tell your readers a little story like I just did–doesn’t have to be a long, drawn-out thing–and let them know who YOU are. We all crave connection, so give it to us who read you–don’t just tell us you have this or that to sell, week after week, because then it feels like all we are to you is a possible income source.

We want to know about you, what you think, and how your heart feels. Write from there, and your aligned readers will love you and your products and services. Anyone else will unsubscribe, and that’s OK!

red-heart-loveWrite from your heart!

Share yourself and your best offers!

Show us that you really understand and care about your readers!

We will then feel that, and respond accordingly.

Electrical Tapping

ATL-inspired

I told you I’d share with you the electrical tapping that helped me start me feeling like I was getting somewhere on the road to recovery from the time I became so ill after breathing paint fumes. (Oh, by the way, the gold paint pen I was using is by KRYLON. Avoid it like crazy, and especially keep it away from your kids!)

I was lying in bed, drifting in and out, feeling like a puzzle someone had thrown on the floor in little pieces. I felt as if I had no internal structure–my bones felt shattered, and the cohesiveness of the connective unions of brain synapses, muscles, tendons and everything felt broken. It was truly weird–like I was a toy about to be put together.

So I just laid there and visualized a kind of map, like my body’s original blueprint. You know those books you see overlays of transparent pages with muscle, fascia and bone and organs? It was like that. And I imagined that there were little energy threads connecting everything. Read more to find out what I said as I tapped, and to see a tapping chart.Read More

The Night of Terror: How Women Attained the Right to Vote.

women

The Night of Terror, and how it helped women attain the right to vote.

Lucy Burns (inset) was an American suffragette. After protesting in D.C., she was arrested and sent to a workhouse. To break her and the other women’s spirits, the jailers began what has become known as the “Night of Terror.”

Lucy Burns was beaten and handcuffed to her cell door with her hands above her head and left that way for the entire night. Of all the American Suffragists, Lucy Burns spent the most time in jail.

Have you read this by Karen Hawk?

Maybe you’ve seen this article by Karen Hawk, but I think it’s worth a repeat.

“The women were innocent and defenseless. And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden’s blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of “obstructing sidewalk traffic.”

They beat Lucy Burn, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air. They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold.

Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.

Thus unfolded the “Night of Terror” on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson’s White House for the right to vote.

So, refresh my memory. Some women won’t vote this year because–why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our vote doesn’t matter? It’s raining?

For weeks, the women’s only water came from an open pail. Their food–all of it colorless slop–was infested with worms. When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

Last week, I went to a sparsely attended screening of HBO’s new movie “Iron Jawed Angels.” It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have my say. I am ashamed to say I needed the reminder.

All these years later, voter registration is still my passion. But the actual act of voting had become less personal for me, more rote. Frankly, voting often felt more like an obligation than a privilege. Sometimes it was inconvenient.

My friend Wendy, who is my age and studied women’s history, saw the HBO movie, too. When she stopped by my desk to talk about it, she looked angry.

She was – with herself. “One thought kept coming back to me as I watched that movie,” she said. “What would those women think of the way I use–or don’t use–my right to vote? All of us take it for granted now, not just younger women, but those of us who did seek to learn.”

The right to vote, she said, had become valuable to her “all over again.” HBO will run the movie periodically before releasing it on video and DVD.

I wish all history, social studies and government teachers would include the movie in their curriculum. I want it shown on Bunko night, too, and anywhere else women gather. I realize this isn’t our usual idea of socializing, but we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think a little shock therapy is in order.

It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse.

Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn’t make her crazy. The doctor admonished the men: “Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity.”
